Is it worth bringing in this free agent?

|

On Friday night we saw the transfer window slam shut, and we completed the signing of Yossi Benayoun from Chelsea on a year long loan. Yossi returns to the club after leaving us in 2007 going to play for Liverpool, Chelsea and at Arsenal before returning to the club.

I felt that we had made some brilliant acquisitions during the summer, Mohamed Diame has shown very early signs of becoming a midfield general with his power, strength and vision he could turn out to be one of the best bosman’s of the summer. The deal to bring James Collins back was poignant because he gave the young centre backs, Winston Reid and James Tomkins some experience that was needed. Though without doubt the best signing of the summer was the loan deal that will surely turn into a permanent deal for the enigmatic Andy Carroll.

I must confess I was very sceptical of this signing before the weekend, I thought that the amount of money that we were going to lay out on this deal for just one player was absurd, and the fact that his career at Liverpool was one that had more downs than positives it would be a overpaid deal for an over rated player. Though after his performance for the first 65 minutes on Saturday, I have been convinced otherwise. Andy was quite brilliant; he played like he was back at Newcastle United and for me the common denominator from that side and this one is Captain fantastic, Kevin Nolan.

Though having said that, I was slightly disappointed that we failed to bring in another centre back. We at home have showed how solid we can be and I cannot remember a time where we have managed to keep two home clean sheets to start a season, but on our road trip to Swansea we showed definite frailties and I was slightly worried at this.

No matter how good, Winston Reid, James Tomkins and James Collins play this year, we cannot stop or hide from the fact that one, two or possibly all 3 of our recognised centre backs will pick up knocks and niggles during the season, and I feel that with only Alou Diarra and George McCartney as makeshift centre backs in the squad West Ham united are running thin on the ground in that position.

With this in mind, I suggest that it is time that we look into the free agent market and a centre back that we could possibly look to bring in is John Mensah. Due to the fact that he is a free agent, West Ham can sign players that are out of contract during the season without using the transfer window. Meaning that players like Michael Owen and Royston Drenthe could still sign for clubs.

Mensah is a player who is out of contract after being released by his former club Lyon. John Mensah is the former Ghanaian captain who took his national side to the World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa where his side suffered a penalty shoot out defeat to Uruguay. Mensah spent two seasons in the Premier League with Sunderland but they didn’t take up the option to make his move permanent after two loan spells. The problem that Mensah has, is that he is quite injury prone. This would definitely be a problem because he is a player we could bring in as cover for our defence but trusting him to stay fit is a risk. Though we could give him a risk, if we only had him on a contract that meant he was being paid on the amount of games that he featured in.

The more I think about it, the more outrageous it seems. We’ve played 3 at home this season, won all 3, kept 3 clean sheets, scored 6 goals and lets not forget that the 2 Premier League wins were against decent, established Premier League teams.

Don’t remember a lot about Mensah from his season at Sunderland but it can’t hurt to bring in some defensive cover with PL experience, even if we have been solid bar 2 defensive errors so far this season.
