How will Cole respond?

|

West Ham United have been very busy in the transfer market, improving the squad with no less than 10 players, but none of them stand out more than the loan capture of the big man, Andy Carroll. The question is how will our previous first choice target man Carlton Cole respond to the competition?

Here are my views…

So far season after season, Carlton Cole has been the main focal point of any attack the Hammers have tried to deploy, utilising his height and power to as much effect as possible, but it’s the inconsistency which has seen the likes of Sam Allardyce, Avram Grant and Gianfranco Zola try their luck in getting the best out of him but fail, with only the latter achieving the best results whilst he was in charge of the Hammers.

Many fans question Cole’s ability in the top flight, causing many doubts to how long he will last in the side with the likes of Ricardo Vaz Te and Modibo Maiga fighting for their places, both of which are capable of playing in the centre forward role, let alone with Andy Carroll heading the door down to charge into the starting eleven. Despite the lack of goals, some fans have great admiration for what Cole has done for the club, by taking wage cuts and declaring his love for the club, but even more so last season; helping set up the winning goal in the play-off final and scoring one himself, that won us promotion back to the Premier League.

He is the type of player people want to like and want to perform well, he tries hard for the club and his mentality is very professional and fans appreciate that, however, it is just a shame his performances don’t always stand out and force you to watch him the whole game, rather than the ball. No doubt, on his day Cole is one of the hardest players for defenders to cope with in football and he will destroy teams, but off his game he is a target for every fan in the stadium, home or away.

It’s frustrating because Hammers fans know what he can do, we just wish he could do it week in week out, but as time goes on it’s looking less and less likely to happen, especially now that there is a new guy in town, who is determined to hit the ground running and I dare anyone to try and stop

him…that man of course is Andy Carroll.

With a dream debut performance under his belt (minus the injury and no goal return) I can only see him going from strength to strength, his performance is what fans have been hoping Cole would deliver us for years, he won balls constantly in the air and played a part in all 3 goals we slotted past Fulham.

It is going to be interesting to see how Cole will respond to his performance and if he is going to take his chance to hold a place in the starting line-up, whilst Carroll recovers from high injury, that he picked up on his debut. I fully expect to see him give it his all, working hard, challenging in the air at every opportunity, however I can’t see him scoring too many in that time.

I honestly hope the fans get behind Cole in the next couple of games; he is a player who needs to have that confidence and knowing the fans admire his talents will surely do wonders for him psychologically.

Something to think about, would Big Sam ever consider playing both Andy Carroll and Carlton Cole up front in the same team? Or is that just me being too exuberant with starting 11 possibilities? Or better yet, could they play in the same team together, or cancel each other out?

Colo will always be here. Many trikers hae come and gone but CC has always remains faithful and done his share for the team. Over the years, he has held often on his own the team attack. For me, he does not have to prove anything, like AC to anybody. Just keep doing what he knows best and I am sure he will hold the front line with pride and hopefully remains true claret and blue unlike many others whocome in for a short while and dissapear!

      Spot On!

For the length of time Cole has been here to say he should have something to prove is nonsense. He is a valuable team player and has been for some time.
Keep up the good work Carlton!
