Should West Ham look to snap up this free agent?

|

Royston Drenthe provided much flare to Everton’s line up last year; he added moments of true inspiration and showed that he has a touch of class. Drenthe signed for Everton last year on a season long loan from the Spanish giants, Real Madrid.

This was during Drenthe’s final year with a contract at Madrid and now is a free agent. Could he be a cheap and valuable option to the West Ham line up, now that he is being heavily linked with a return to the Barclays Premier League?

In my opinion, I would not want to see him at West Ham, of course, if he was signed I would like any fan get behind any player who wears the West Ham shirt but, I would like to see him kept clear of West Ham. For me, of what we showed in our win over Aston Villa is that we are settled and we are comfortable with the team and have a good morale and a good work effort and I feel that if we went ahead and signed a player such as Royston Drenthe it could be a destructive and distracting influence in the team. I say this because he clearly has some underlying issues that a club, whose main priority is to avoid relegation, should not take on.

Royston came through the Dutch leagues and he was lighting them up, he was a talent that had the potential to set European football ablaze. This was clearly evident in the U-21 European Championships in 2007 in which familiar names such as Mark Noble, Ricardo Vaz Te and Nigel Reo-Coker competed in, where he starred and won the Golden Player award, an award which had previously been held by names such as Luis Figo, Petr Cech and Fabio Cannavaro, so Royston was in some very good company.

This tournament then rewarded him with a summer transfer to Madrid, where he started life in Spain with a run in the team, being a regular in the first team. Though he started to suffer from anxiety issues, which meant that his performances were becoming weaker and this left him out of the side and then followed to 2 loan spells, only one of which becoming successful. Though that successful loan spell was tainted by the ending of Drenthe’s time at Everton, he was told by a embarrassed David Moyes to stay away from the club after he failed to report for training after he was given a period of leave.

This is why I see no reason for West Ham United to make a move to convince Drenthe to join us because he is quite simply a Prima-Donna. The club, as I stated earlier seem to have good team spirit and a very good work ethic. This is what we will need for this season. The win over Villa showed this hard working and honest side to West Ham, we haven’t at the moment the obvious skill we will need to break every team down, of which I can see Sam Allardyce trying to make a move for a player who will bring this to our squad. Though, Royston isn’t the man to bring in. If we do bring him in, I could only see him becoming a disruptive and distracting influence to the team and this could mean that we will lose the show of hard working endeavor to the shape of the squad that we have at the moment.

If Royston, were to become our ninth summer signing he would need to be set straight and need to learn the morals of fighting for his place in the team. He has been on a very cushy contact at Real Madrid and has rarely been needed in that time. I would propose that we sign him on a pay as you play basis, with an option of a regular weekly contract after a period of time. This would benefit West Ham, because this would show the club whether he was a player who had the moral capability and the skill to work hard for his place in the side and could benefit us, because he would have to play well to keep himself in the side. If he failed to play well, he could be dropped meaning that he wouldn’t make the money that he wants. Then again, if he plays well, we could offer him a regular contract, which would tie the 25-year-old down at the club.

Everton fan who’s caught the link on News Now and its got to be said you are dead right with your take on Drenthe.

The lad rocks up to Goodison with his merry little band of hangers-on and he’s Billy Big balls. Not a team player, looked like Phil Neville was going to deck him on the pitch at one point it got that bad!.

He’s got talent, no disputing it, and you’ll still find Evertonians who would see him back in jersey just for those rare sublime moments when Drenthe really is god on the pitch. Those moments are too few to balance out the times when he’s dispossessed and, instead of trying to bloody do something about it, goes to ground rolling or, off the pitch, when he still believes in his own divinity.

Bottom line he’s mad as a box of snakes, you dont want him near your squad and Nolan would push his teeth through the back of his head in less than a month…..you know what now I think of this a bit more!!!!

Another Everton fan here, also saw this on NewsNow.

I agree with Steve 100%, except you also have to know that the rumours are that not only did he fail to report for training once but apparently when he finally turned up he was drunk. No idea if this is true but what is certainly true is that after that incident, whatever happened, Moyes completely ostracised him from all first team training at Everton and his career with us was over.

I hope he matures as on the pitch he can be sublime, but I doubt he’ll ever change.

That’s good honest input from Everton fans, but can you really trust a Scally…????

Word is, the deal for this Boukari lad is all but a done deal. So thankfully won’t have to make the clearly difficult and divisive decision on Drenthe.

Just another defender and I feel that’ll be enough, no?
