No need for this Tangerine

Blackpool’s Matthew Phillips is the latest player to join the long list of West Ham’s transfer targets as Sam Allardyce continues his attempts to strengthen his squad.

Although only Twitter rumours at present, so as always take with a large dollop of salt but it would make sense if the Hammers were to pursue this target. Phillips is the latest winger to be linked to the club as Allardyce looks to make his attacking options before the window slams shut on the 31st.

We all saw the quality that the Blackpool number seven when the Hammers met the Tangerines at Wembley on May 19th and if the Aylesbury born winger bought his shooting boots to Wembley it could have been so different for both the clubs.

Known for his speed and vision Phillips would tick all the boxes for big Sam who is looking for speed down the wings as he looks to build a formidable Premiership squad. Phillips who scored on Tuesday for Blackpool in the 2-1 win against Leeds United has scored nine goals in 61 appearances for Blackpool. At 21 years of age that record is an impressive one, his pass for Tom Ince’s goal at Wembley showed what a classy player he is.

The Twitter grumblings suggest that the winger would be interested in a move to the east end and his skills could well get the West Ham faithful on their feet. But with deal with Matthew Jarvis and Royston Drenthe in the pipeline, I just can’t see a move for Matt Phillips materialising, unless a move for Jarvis breaks down.

With rumours of a 10 million pound bid for Jarvis as well as a three year deal for Drenthe I just can’t see where the owner can justify the need to spend more money in the wide attacking areas. I believe the Hammers still need a forward and right back and would rather see the money remaining on those areas.

Come on you Irons!
