Would we welcome back our very own ‘pantomime villain’?

|

Jermain Defoe, West Ham’s very own pantomime villain following his move from east to north London after the Hammers were relegated in 2003.

But with the Hammers back in the Premier League and with Defoe rumoured to be available following the departure of Harry Redknapp and the arrival of Andre Villas Boas, with a manager with new idea and new targets, should the Hammers consider raiding their rivals for the former Hammer.

Now forgetting the Bravado and booing, there is no denying Defoe’s Premier League experience and finishing ability, which is second to none in worldwide football. With West Ham in need for a nippy striker who can finish could a move for Defoe’s return to West Ham be a match made in heaven.

Defoe, a former fans favourite turned villain after his antics in the season leading up to his move to Spurs; his antics including rash challenges and darn right laziness in the Championship which lead to his move from hero to villain. But with rumours of a big money move for a Premier League striker from the ramblings on twitter, Defoe would certainly fit that bill.

Defoe who has a fantastic goal scoring record wherever he has played whether that was at Portsmouth, Tottenham and at West Ham, he could represent a superb signing. Yes he was a toe rag but what happened in the past is the past, he is a top class player and a player who would rapidly become one of West Ham’s best players. With Sam Baldock and Nicky Maynard we have players of similar qualities, but with more potential. With money being needed to be spent in areas of far more importance like at the heart of the defence as well as on the right hand side of defence, a move for Defoe could affect this.

But if the Hammers were to agree a fee with Tottenham, something I see as unlikely, giving with the success ratio of our previous transfer dealings with the Spurs in past, I can’t see the England international fancying a move back to E13. I am also positive we wouldn’t be the only possible suitors for him, and bigger clubs than us would be after him.

So would I take him back? Now I’m the first to criticise him for his actions in his brief Championship stint at the club, not that id boo him, but there is denying his ability and qualities when he crosses that white line. His finishing is second to none and his ability would almost guarantee West Ham United’s Premier League status.

I’d have him back. Guaranteed goals from him.

  • arthur gillett says:

without a second thought, the past is the past and we need goals as they will be hard to come by. 29 so in his prime, great finisher/poacher and him, maiga, vaz te we would have pace up front. If money is the stumbling block then I would sell C Cole to fund plus try and take Bassong on loan -2 slots filled

same old west ham supporters slag off defoe then crawl back under thier stones when theres a chance of him returning.

is it any wonder that no one has any respect for them.

they are plastic supporters no history no chance this season either, just making up the numbers.

    • Michael says:

Bore off Paul, talk about plastic supporter where were you when tottscum were crap? Oh they still are……mug

      • Kel says:

I don’t think AVB will allow Defoe to leave.
Either way Spurs are a better team then West Ham. But its only down to structure.
West Ham are a big club, just not in recent years. and i am a Spurs fan. so paul’s comment really just a stupid fan looking to provoke a reaction. and Michael, you gave him what he wanted. Both of you grow up.

I’m a Hardened Hammer but even i wouldn’t boast about winner the Inter two bob cup!!! lol

  • Dave Chimbonda says:

He was a selfish barsteward then, and is a selfish barsteward now. If the hammers went back down at the end of the season he would be off quicker than you could say Demba Ba.

  • Ironman says:

Never forget and never forgive. He was a disgrace and has no right to be spoken of in terms of wearing a West Ham shirt again. But we know it is a non story. He’s too gready to return and even if he wanted to the fans simply wouldn’t have it. I don’t care how good he may or may not be, he has forfeited the right to any association with West Ham.

  • The Cat says:

Beggars can’t be chosers and we are beggars most certainly Beggars right now!
Football has moved on and the days of total loyalty are long gone. We will need goals….. Defoe score’s goals its as simple as that. All this long memory nonsense is complete and utter Tosh!
As far as I was concerned Frank Lampard is the Panto Villain, who doesn’t regret a thing (or hasn’t owned up)about how he feels about West Ham, whereas Defoe has…. and so we should all move on like men and don’t throw a hissy fit like kids.
Defoe back at West Ham….. I’m IN!

  • Nick says:

Stuff him, he is 29, (admitedley not that old)but we already have a squad full of young strikers we need to be developing, they will just rot away if we put him in front of them just so he can earn his pension after bing dumped by the yids cos he is not fit enough and his goal ratio isnt good enough. I am sure Charlton will have him.

  • Alan says:

Wouldn’t think twice about it. I would Defo take Defoe back.

  • HammerTime says:

If somehow we were offered the chance to take him then we should bite their hand off.

We won’t stand a chance of signing him, but if we did, then we should.

Players have committed far greater crimes than what he did.

  • Stratty says:

You should snap him up, he’s a fantastic player and I’d be sorry to lose him, but you can’t expect someone of that quality to spend the best part of his career on the bench. Have you got a tall fella for him to work with him?

  • Ironman says:

Never gunna happen. Spurs wont sell to us, we wont pay his wages. Someone has just made the assumption that he wont fit into AVB’s style and he wants to stay in London so all of a sudden hes coming back to the Boleyn. Nick saying his goal ratio isn’t good enough is ridiculous, i think he scored like 17 goals with just 11 starts last season which proves he is well capable of 30 plus goals if he starts every game.

  • Garry says:

NO way should we welcome him back Zaha is a better prospect it’s about time we signed him

  • irons says:

relax everyone, as soon as Bagpuss turns up somewhere new, he will run along like a well behaved puppy.

  • TonyRich says:

Defoe is not a top 5 quality striker and we Spurs need to sell. West Ham could do with him back. His goal ratio is not bad BUT his goal per season ratio is diabolical – only once has he got more than 13 league goals. He runs out of steam early in season and does not warrant selection.
