Whatever happened to Trevor Sinclair?

|

Growing up, Trevor Sinclair was one of my favourite players. A versatile and creative player, he mainly played on the wings and occasionally upfront when called upon. Sinclair began his career at Blackpool, where he made his debut aged 16. He went on to make 112 appearances for the Seasiders during his four year stay, scoring 15 goals. Sinclair then went to QPR in 1993 and spent 5 years at the club, making 168 appearances and scoring 16 goals. He also scored the 1997 Premier League “Goal of the Season” with a bicycle kick from outside the box (if you haven’t seen it, look it up on “youtube”). In January 1998, Sinclair moved to the Hammers for £2.3m plus Iain Dowie and Keith Rowland going to QPR. He was an instant hit at Upton Park, scoring 7 goals in the remaining

14 games to help the Hammers finish 8th in the Premier League. He became a first team regular over the next few seasons, often playing on the left wing, which is the position he played for England during the World Cup in 2002. In the 2002/03 season, the Hammers were relegated, despite some great performances from Sinclair. He was sold to Manchester City for £3.3m after making 177 appearances, scoring 37 goals.

At City, Sinclair made 82 appearances, scoring 5 goals in a four year stay. He scored the first goal at the City of Manchester Stadium in the then UEFA Cup. Sinclair played on both wings, more on the right after the departure of Shaun Wright-Phillips. Sinclair was released at the end of the 2006/07 season.

Sinclair then joined Cardiff City, were knee problems prevented him from showing his full potential. He made 21 appearances for Cardiff, scoring just the one goal. One of these appearances came in the 2008 FA Cup final loss to Portsmouth, in which Sinclair came on as a substitute. He was released

at the end of the season.

So where is he know? Sinclair is now living in Dubai, working as a talk show host for “Final Score” which reports on the recent Premier League action for Abu Dhabi Sports. He also coaches football in Abu Dhabi. Sinclair enjoyed a nineteen year career. He made 560 professional appearances, scoring 74 goals and made 12 appearances for England. Sinclair will always be remembered at all the clubs he played at for his creativity and flair, along with some crazy hairstyles!
