Top SIX West Ham strikers of the PL era

|

With it being a bit quiet on the transfer front here’s a rundown of the top 6 West Ham goal scorers since 1990(ish)

6. Paolo Di Canio

The flamboyant Italian famously pushed over referee Paul Alcock, scored a great volley against Wimbledon, caught the ball against Everton and declared his fascist allegiance. He also scored 51 goals in all appearances for West Ham between 1999-2003. He has now taken the unfashionable town of Swindon into the heady heights of League 1.

5. Marlon Harewood

They said he resembled a headless chicken on the pitch and had a head like a character from Super Mario Brothers. He will be fondly remembered for a FA Cup semi final winning goal against Middlesbrough and that last minute winner against Arsenal. He went onto score 55 goals in total and his move to Aston Villa came and went. Unfortunately he hasn’t really had the same form since although he was a China League Runner up in 2011.

4. Carlton Cole

He’s not great but he tries hard” is the much maligned phrase that describes Cole. He’s one of those players that can be brilliant one moment and useless the next. This was epitomised at home to Spurs where a wonder goal was followed by a great set up for Jermain Defoe. But you can’t fault his loyalty and in his 6 years he’s scored 57 goals including the opening goal in the Play-off final.

3. Julian Dicks

I know he was a defender but how prolific was he?! John Lyall signed ‘Terminator’ for £300k in 1988 and he was notable for his hard tackling and equally hard penalties. This style of play saw him get sent off 3 times in the 1992-3 season but also be joint top scorer in 1995-6 with 10 goals. He ended up scoring 61 goals in total and went on run a pub, play professional golf and manage Grays Athletic in a varied post football career.

2 Trevor Morley

Tricky Trev was signed from Man City with Ian Bishop and they struck a good partnership. A great striker – he was top scorer for 3 seasons and was also Hammer of the Year in 1994. He scored a total of 70 goals and now lives in Norway and acts as a TV pundit.

1. Tony Cottee

Anthony Richard ‘Tony’ Cottee began his career at West Ham and scored on his debut aged 17 and he was briefly the most expensive player signed by a British club. He went onto score 146 goals in 2 spells at West Ham and he achieved feat of playing for a different team in each of the top four divisions of English football in the same season. Statistically he is the best goal scorer West Ham of the last 20 or so years and is now a great pundit in his post football career.

What do you think? Do the stats lie? Who would you include? Should Dean Ashton be included? Let me know.

  • BrendanWHU says:

NO DEAN ASHTON???? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!How can you put Harewood and Cole before Ashton?!?!

  • Leggesxi_whufc says:

Ashton, Tevez, hartson & kitson ??????

  • Clarence Waldorf says:

It says goalscorers – guessing none of them scored as many as those on the list! Think Ashton scored less than 20 goals!

  • Kevin's Nolan sister says:

It says goal scorers not best strikers! Ashton , Tevez et al were all great but didn’t score as many as Morley and Cottee etc. Can people please read before commenting?

  • Kwame says:

You simply have to have Tevez and Ashton in this list! The two best strikers to play for us in recent memory.

  • Tony D says:

Cottee was the best striker we’ve had for years – didn’t realise he scored so many goals. By the way article says goalscorers not best strikers. It’s about how many goals they’ve scored!

  • Roly says:

Yeah it clearly states goalscorers not strikers. Assuming some people can’t read. Obviously if Deano hadn’t retired of if Tevez had played for more than 1 season they would’ve scored more! Very good article. Harewood did look like a gumba!

TOP SIX WEST HAM STRIKERS OF THE PL ER
Copy and pasted from the article title. Dunno what everyone else has been reading, the title says strikers!

i think ashton should be included……carlton cole has got an equivilent of 1 goal ever 3.6 games in a west ham shirt where as ashton got one ever 2.9 games….that means goals to game he is better and technically a better goal scorer with ashton scoreing 19 in 56 and cole scoring 56 in 205 games in all competitions……also baring in mind that 15 of coles career total came from 41 appearances in the Championship where as dean ashton scored every hammers goal in the prem……ashton had the potential to be an england starter and a west ham legend if his career wasnt cut short.

  • Kevin Nolan Sisters says:

Guessing it’s the wrong title as even the overall heading says ‘goal scorers’ – Julian Dicks wouldn’t be in there otherwise!

Thanks Aaron for the goals per game ratio – should always be considered!

  • Simone says:

Io quest’anno le mie ferie le ho prenotate sul sito Parto Subito. Qualcuno lo conosce?

  • rlk1 says:

Frank McAvennie, Marlon Harewood, Carlton Cole, Tony Cotee and Dean Ashton
