Going on the defensive

|

With the departures of Abdoulaye Faye, Danny Collins, Herita Ilunga and Julien Faubert the West Ham defence now looks a little short on numbers.

Currently our defence stands at Danny Potts, James Tomkins, Winston Reid, Guy Demel, Joey O’Brien and Jordan Spence. Even with the arrival of George McCartney we still desperately need cover especially in the centre back positions.

The fastest growing Hammers website is now on Facebook, click the link to be entered into our up and coming competitions http://www.facebook.com/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

At left back, I believe BFS will make McCartney the first choice with Matty Taylor rotating between RB and RM and Danny Potts providing cover. So this side of defence seems to be finalised.

At right back I feel BFS will put his faith in Guy Demel as our first choice with a new signing providing rotational cover and Joey O’Brien/Jordan Spence providing any additional cover. Nathaniel Clyne, Chris Solly and Danny Simpson have all been rumoured transfer targets for this position. Hopefully a young RB will come in to ensure there is competition for this position.

Following Faye’s seemingly unnecessary departure our only two recognised centre backs are Winston Reid and James Tomkins. I believe these two young players can be the backbone of the West Ham team next season however I still feel there needs to be added experience and cover in case of injury so two more reinforcements are needed for this position. With this in mind we’ve seemed to be linked to every available centre back in the world over the past month including Abdoulaye Ba, William Gallas, Kader Maganda, and Chris Samba. Samba stands out as a quality signing but it looks unlikely that he would move to us from Russia. Gallas would provide experience but there is the likelihood he’d just be looking for his last big pay cheque. Whereas Ba and Maganda both seem very much like the type of big and strong defender that BFS likes, so chances are we’ll end up with one of them.

So with only a few weeks left until our opening game against Aston Villa it seems like there will be a number of defensive arrivals – let’s just hope they improve the quality and not just the quantity of the defence.

What do you think? Will we start the season with a settled back four? Should Abdoulaye Faye have stayed on for another season? Will some of the youth such as Spence, Potts or Driver get a chance? Will Reid and Tomkins continue their fledgling partnership at the heart of defence? Let us know what you think.
