What happened to this two time Hammer?

|

Don Hutchison is a former Scotland international who enjoyed two spells at West Ham United, from 1994-1996 and again from 2001-2005.  He was the record transfer signing both times he joined the club.  Hutchison played primarily in midfield with an ability to play forward on occasion.  In his first spell at the club, having joined from Liverpool, he scored 11 times in 35 league appearances.  During his second spell at the club, he was hampered by numerous injuries and struggled to get an extended run in the first XI.  Consequently, he left the club after the 2005.  In the second spell he made 63 league appearances for the club, scoring 5 goals.  His Scotland record was 6 goals in 26 appearances.  His style epitomized the midfield play that used to be much more common in the Premier League, with box-to-box running and well-timed tackles.  So where is Don Hutchison now?

Aged 40, Don is now a coach at youth side Colebrook Royals FC in Chigwell.  He has also worked with Al Jazeera and TalkSport on various projects.  Still relatively young, it remains to be seen whether Hutchison will pursue a career in management, commentating, or relative obscurity.  Either way, Hutchison was a great midfielder during his first spell at the club.  Who knows how important he could have been had he not be so often injured during his second spell.  Wherever life takes him next, let’s hope that it is good for this former Hammer.

Hutch was a great servant and it should be remembered that his goals were usually excellently executed and also at important times. he was not unlike our current Kev Nolan. We wish him the very best.
