Lets find the balance

|

After half a dozen signings in between in the summer of 2007 that represented high transfer fees and astronomical wages being paid for players that had been offloaded by their clubs who no doubt had been shrewder than our Icelandic owners at the time in their analysis of their players fitness and capability to cut it in the English Premier League, West Ham went into near financial meltdown in 2008, resulting in our eventual relegation in 2011.

Such financial naivety in transfer planning was evident by the West Ham United board from the moment we let the Icelandic mob walk into the Upton Park gates. Signing big-name players past their peak on better contracts than clubs of Arsenal and Newcastle United’s stature had been offering and then realising we couldn’t afford to keep them, but taking no resulting action, affected West Ham’s balance sheets heavily for the following two managerial regimes, severely restricting future managers in Gianfranco Zola and Avram Grant to strengthen the team to their satisfatction.

Now when we are linked with once great players of Owen Hargreaves’s and Guti’s ilk, groans of concern must surely be filtering through East London. Whilst players of Guti’s class and experience will certainly be welcome to the Hammers ranks in the middle of the park, the owners must not invest the bulk of our wage budget into players past the peak of their years. A balance must be found for the starting 11 but a player of Wilfred Zaha’s maturity considering for his age, pace and energy would be the primary qualities to look to bring in when attempting to bring in players who are eager to impress in the best league in the world.

Jussi Jaaskelainen and Mohamed Diame represent decent additions to the with an experienced Premier League shot-stopper needed to have been recruited after Robert Green commute to West London and Diame may now offer stiff competition to Mark Noble, Kevin Nolan and Jack Collison in the centre of midfield.

Rumours of moves for Fiorentina centre back Gamberini and Eljero Elia show Sam or a scout in the background is looking for players in a league that hasn’t exactly been the primary source of transfer targeting interest from the bigger Premier League clubs in the past few years, a shrewd move by a manager who possessed knowledge of the foreign transfer market in his time at Bolton Wanderers.

The spine of the squad to make the step up to the Premier League is in place no doubt. Therefore, carefully chosen, top quality additions at a reasonable wage cost will be the requirements from the West Ham fans. Ideally, another defender, a winger and a 15 goal a season striker before August 31 please Mr. Gold and Sullivan.
