How do you solve a problem like Barrera?

|

When Avram Grant signed attack minded Mexican international Pablo Barrera, the excitement around Upton Park was high after he wowed fans during the 2010 FIFA World cup, but now just 2 years almost to the day that he signed for the Hammers, the question is what to do with Pablo Barrera.

The Mexican International joined West Ham from UNAM for a fee of £4 million, and the ticket sales of the Deportivo home preseason friendly in 2010 showed just how excited fans were to see the new

star in action. But just 15 games later in the claret and blue it quickly became apparent that he was too lightweight and far from ready for Premier league football, and was deemed a flop. Following a run of zero assists and goals and after failing to help keep the Hammers in the Premier league, following the departure of Avram Grant, he quickly followed the Israeli out the door with the arrival of Sam Allardyce.

As the Hammers prepared for the Championship, Sam Allardyce agreed to allow Barrera to join Real Zaragoza allowing him to link up with former Mexican coach Javier Aguirre he made 20 appearances for the La Liga side scoring one goal. Now it remains to be seen whether he is in Big Sam’s plans but articles on WHUFC.com which praise his form for Mexico have reminded the Hammers faithful of his abilities.

Now for me, when I saw him I could see that he was all about pace and skill but he lacked the final ball or finish, I think he has the potential but in Premier League I think he will struggle to make a difference, he is too lightweight and will be easily worked out in the hustle and bustle of the English top flight. As much as I would love to see him live up to his potential as I would with any Hammers

player, I think the Premier League is a step to far for the 5ft 8in 24 year old Mexican winger.

I suspect he may well be given a chance to impress Allardyce in preseason but I just can’t see where he can fit in to Sam system and with players like Eilia and Wilfried Zaha being linked with a move it appears that Big Sam has other players in mind ahead of Barrera, and I would guess he will be shipped out abroad somewhere. If Allardyce plays 4-3-3 with Ricardo Vaz Te on one wing and with either Elia or Zaha linked with a move and potentially on the other wing I think Barrera will struggle to fit in.

All in all I believe the only thing to do with Barrera is to ship him out as I just fail to see where he can fit in, and we can all watch that YouTube clip with him beating men for fun and burying his chance

leaving us to think what could have been. I can see him plying his trade abroad next season and not at the home of football.

Meanwhile the Hammers yesterday completed the first of their two Bosman free the club confirmed they were in talks with when Jussi Jääskeläinen signed terms, the other free on the radar is widely

thought to be Momo Diame who according to sky sports news had second rounds of talks and is favourites to join the Hammers and he could be a West Ham players by early next week. However

the east end club look set to miss out on Krasic who looks set to join Liverpool.

give him untill january I say. If he does not perform then get rid of him but if he does keep him. It is simple as that. He has looked a very good player internationally and at least be given a second chance to revive his career with us.

I agree I think it is a shame that he hasn’t lived up to his potential but the fact that he is too lightweight for the PL coupled with doubts over his commitment to the club mean we should sell him. Also, from what I have heard we may actually make a decent profit on him with other clubs abroad keen to buy him
