FIVE centre backs West Ham should sign

|

For those of you who read my “this is not Football Manager Sam” post last week, you will know my views on the need of more defensive players than strikers.

So I will try to identify 5 players we could bring in to strengthen the centre back area which as things stands only has the two players fighting for it, James Tomkins and Winston Reid.

The fastest growing Hammers website is now on Facebook, click the link to be entered into our up and coming competitions http://www.facebook.com/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

So I’ll get the ball rolling at option number 1- Ryan Shawcross- The big Stoke City centre half would add brutality and an no nonsense attitude to the back line. Good in the air, and a threat at set pieces this former England international could well prove to be a shrewd signing for big Sam, one issue could be a fee for the long serving Stoke defender.

Option 2- David Wheater- The tall Bolton Wanderers centre half, who has just seen his side relegated could be a more viable option for the Hammers as he could be available on the cheap following the relegation of Allardyce’s former club. The former Middlesbrough man is also commanding in the air, and has age on his side, Big Sam could do a lot worse than returning to his former club to snap up Wheater.

Number 3: Sebastian Bassong- The French defender who spent last season on loan at Wolves is finding himself lower and lower in the pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur and could walk into West Ham’s side if were honest. Strong and good in the air,Bassong could be a superb signing for Allardyce.

Number 4: Carlos Cuellar- The 30 year old former Aston Villa man, who is available on a free following his release, could act as a perfect signing for the Hammers, Cuellar can play full back as well as in the middle could be a great signing for cover.

Number 5: Rhys Williams- The Middlesbrough utility man would be a good signing for Sam Allardyce. The Australian international can play midfield and at the back would make a sensible signing as his versatility could be vital for the Hammers as they enter the Premier League. Williams is said to be one of the hottest talents in England and if the Irons could lure him from Boro it could be a great coup for the Allardyce and West Ham.

So they’re my five, you agree? Tweet me @Bowdenwhu

Come on you Irons!

    What about Samba?

    • David Bowden says:

Too expensive i think, would love him though.

      • Jim says:

He’s unhappy though what with the racism over there so you never know, he may ask to leave. And yeah he’d be pricey but the bloke is class. Imagine him and Tomkins at the back. They’d be solid AND would chip in a few goals between them.

      Good call Jim!

  • @daniboi1991 says:

I think we only need a couple for cover as tomka and winston can cut it. I’d say danny collins or someone like that

  • Nightwatchman says:

Centre half is the last position that needs addressed. Must get two quality fullbacks, the midfielders, a winger (or two) and a tall striker first. Centre halves? Take what’s going.

  • Nightwatchman says:

    typo above. Three midfielders.

  • Garry says:

What about roger Johnson or scott dan both would be good

  • chris from Stratford says:

Curtis Davis is the central defender we should sign

  • harvey says:

Robert huth his contract is running out and a new contract is not on the lines , id try to get him he can play cb and rb , what your thoughts

  • Geoff3744 says:

How about Michael Turner from Sunderland

Would fit in well at West Ham

  • Nick says:

Isn’t Wheater long term injured anyway? We definitely need at least 2 though.

  • Mike says:

Ryan Nelsen would be good for a season or two and probably wouldnt cost too much. Not getting his game at Spurs but he’s got experience and a cool head. Something we lack at times when under pressure. Would be a handy person to have on the pitch when leading late in a game. Good mentor for Tomkins and Reid.

Johnson and Dann would also be good.

  • Nick says:

Please take Zat Knight of our hands! Biggest centre half in the country at 6ft 6ins and the biggest pile of crap. We’ll keep Wheater. Even with a season long injury he’s a far better player than the Donkey.
