West Ham United are rumoured to be interested in Stoke City’s big man Kenwyne Jones, who has been playing football in England since moving to Southampton from W Connection in 2004 and was likened to Didier Drogba and was supposed to be the biggest thing out of Trinidad since Dwight Yorke.
Unfortunately, Jones scored only the one goal for Stoke last season in 21 appearances and has fallen out of favour at the Britannia. Could the 6ft 2 target man be a good signing for the Hammers?

Jones’ English football career began at Southampton, where he scored 19 goals in 71 appearances. He also had loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke, before moving to Sunderland, where he made 94 appearances for the Black Cats, scoring 26 goals. He was even linked with a move to Liverpool to replace Peter Crouch. On the 11th of August 2010, Jones completed a £8m move to Stoke, where he fitted perfectly into Tony Pulis’ long-ball style. He scored the winner against the Hammers in that season, scoring 9 goals in total in 34 appearances. However, this season he has been used to warm the bench with Peter Crouch leading the line for Stoke. Jones goal scoring record in England has been less that prolific, however he would suit the Hammers style under Sam Allardyce.
One foreseeable problem is the fact that we have both Carlton Cole and Ricardo Vaz Te, two players who can play as a target man and both who scored goals last season. Moreover, the Hammers also have Nicky Maynard and Sam Baldock, both young strikers who haven’t had many starts for the Hammers, but both looked sharp last season when they did play, so whether the big Stoke man would make the first team is questionable.

In addition to this, only 1 Premier League goal last season is appalling for a player rated at the £5m mark and his goal scoring record in English football is no better than the strikers we have at the moment. For me, Allardyce would be better off investing that money in a playmaker and some quick wide players.
Would Kenwyne Jones be a good addition to the squad? Or would he be another Carew? Tweet me @TollyCoburn

don’t mind signing him purely as back up for Cole
I think Vaz te will be used more in his proper position out wide next year rather than up front
Quite simply………….No Thanks. poor mans Piquionne,
Vaz Te’s proper position is a striker cb and he was mainly used out wide in cocopops under Fat Sam you seem to have written your comment in reverese???
As a Saints fan, I can tell you that our expectation were high – but the reality was poor. Good goals when he has opportunity at his feet, but is very lazy and will not always work to get the ball or position. Looking forward to meeting you guys in the Prem next year… COYS!!
No, no, no
No. We have cole and RVT who both ended the season strongly. Plus, if you are going to bring players on, I would much rather it was baldicj and Maynard. If cole were to get injured at some point say, I think Vaz Te could slot in upfront alongside baldicj or Maynard as he is quite tall and actually wins a lot of headers. Like his Portuguese compatriot Ronaldo, he actually has many of the necessary attributes for a centre forward, despite being mainly seen and deployed as a winger.
He would be good for the hammers but we need Zaha as well
No thank you! Kenwye Jones is a non starter and, frankly, a slap in the face of the strikers we have in Carlton Cole and Ricardo Vaz Te. Both performed brilliantly in the recent Wembley final that got us promoted. Having another John Carew on the books makes no sense at all and is flat out stupid!
please take him 🙂 we will do you a good deal 😉
Will suit Hammers long ball style. He is a bit of a unit and will push players around better than Carew
