Olympic Hammers?

|

Hammer of the year Mark Noble and runner up James Tomkins have both been included in the Team GB shortlist for the upcoming Olympic Games in London. What would these talented young Hammers bring to the Olympic stage?

Nobes’ has had an excellent season for the Hammers this term with no fewer than nine goals to his name and another nine assists. Since Scotty Parker’s departure to the unspeakable place, Noble has settled into a dominating holding role where his craft, vision and tough tackling has led West Ham to a play-off position and a chance of promotion to the Premier League.

Noble would bring qualities that are invaluable to an international manager. He represented and captained England U21’s at the Euro’s scoring two goals in tense penalty shootouts at crucial points. The youngster also plays the kind of game that suits international football, he really can be deadly with his passing when given time and space.

Stuart Pearce was the manager of that U21 side that went so close in the Euro’s and Noble was his captain. I can see ‘psycho’ opting for his captain again and sending the young Hammer out to lead his team.

Tonka’ is one of the classiest defenders West Ham have produced in recent years and speculation linking him with Premier league clubs has never been too far from the newspapers. Tomkins has shown impressive aerial ability whether it be in his own or the opposition’s penalty area. Pearce will have noticed his dominance in the box and the international class that oozes from the popular centre back.

Tomkins also stepped into midfield when injuries blighted the Hammers squad. He looked at home with a solid passing game and an attacking threat that meant my first goal scorer bet would never wander too far from the young defender.

This versatility and eye for goal will make sure Tomkins gets noticed by the Olympic management team. Realistically a squad place would be achievable for the runner up of the Hammer of the year award.

What other Hammers would you put forward for the games?

Do Noble and Tomkins have a chance of making the squad?
