Was this a sensible signing?

Danny Collins secured a move to Upton Park last Friday on loan until the end of the season but just how shrewd will this move prove to be.

Collins who joined from Stoke City made a cameo of the bench last weekend against Doncaster at left back one of the two positions he can play. The versatile defender will prove good cover in the final push for promotion.

With Winston Reid currently out injured, the signing of Collins means that should James Tomkins or Abdoulaye Faye pick up a niggle they would not have to be risked. This weekend was a fine example of mix and match defence. McCartney was forced to play in an unfamiliar right back role whilst attacking player Matty Taylor was forced to play in a more conservative role at left back. I’m sure had Collins joined up with the squad a few days prior to when he did he would have slotted in a left back allowing Taylor

further forward.

 

When speaking to West Ham TV Collins informed us that his position was centre back and that was his preferred position but he is willing to fit in wherever possible for the cause. Collins played

16 games for Ipswich earlier in the season bagging 2 goals so no one can question his experience something the Hammers lack in their back up “rotation” players. With young Potts having to fill in on occasions, so the signing of Collins acts as perfect cover.

Sam Allardyce must read on here as just as the window slammed shut in January I suggested the signing of Collins on loan, I just hope he hasn’t seen my list of players to buy on Football Manager or we will be in trouble!

So all in all I think the signing of Collins will bring vital experience and quality to our rotation players, it is calming to see his name on the bench rather than Potts. I’m not saying I don’t want to see young Pottsy on the bench but at this key stage of the run in it is experience that matters and the 31 year old has that in abundance. He is also a tall man so gives ups vital height in set piece situations, something that we could work on as the goals have dried up a bit of late.

Collins is not expected to be the last of the loan signings to sure up the team. With Portsmouth’s Stephen Henderson set to sign alongside a free agent or two. Twitter is suggesting that there have been talks with Mervan Celik and young Wylde from Rangers.
