Man Mountain

Ok after all the disappointment, pain, frustration and bitterness over that missed opportunity against Watford the other night I want to focus on a positive.

Over the years West Ham United have squandered good money on a series of flops who have never even come close to justifying their huge price tags or ridiculous wages: the likes of Freddie Ljungberg, Benni McCarthy and Kieron Dyer immediately come to mind.

How refreshing that this season we’ve bucked that trend and actually gone to the other extreme and by that I mean getting in a player who didn’t cost us anything and yet has put in consistently good performances…the man I refer to is Abdoulaye Faye.

Brought in on a free transfer in the summer; the colossal of a centre half has impressed with his aerial ability, strength, tenacity, tackling and consistency. The fact that Faye was Sam Allardyce’s first signing speaks volumes; Sam knew he was going to be in for a hell of a war getting West Ham promoted at the first attempt so he went out and signed up a real warrior.

Last Sunday I watched the Cardiff match on the box with a mate and we both couldn’t stop remarking that they simply couldn’t get past Faye; be it through balls or long balls that man was simply unflappable and unmoveable.

Faye may not be fancy on the ball, he may not be able to stride out to the half-way line and ping the ball out to an on-rushing winger but when it comes to the basics of defending he’s brilliant, no frills and no nonsense; did we really effectively trade this guy for Upson?

With 12 games to go till we know whether it will be the ecstasy of automatic promotion or the agony of the play-offs; Faye will have a huge role to play as he and Tomkins are forging a great partnership. As hard as it seems to believe after the disaster that was Watford; we’re always going to score goals with the fire-power we possess. So as long as we can keep them out at the other end; automatics and the Championship title are very much within our grasp.

Faye as much as anyone will be key to our success.
