Tony Carr: Securing a bright future for the Irons

|

West Ham’s academy of football may have been put on the back burners for the moment in time as Allardyce turns to experience heads to secure promotion from the Npower championship, but the future is looking good for sure as the young Hammers showed tonight against Wolves in the Youth cup.

It has been twelve years since the Hammers last won the competition but tonight the young guns showed they’re no pushovers against Premier league youth opposition, in a 3-2 win over the Midlands side. Goals by Elliott Lee and Kenzer Lee secured the visitors passage through to the fourth round.

The Hammers defeated their Midlands counterparts who were previously unbeaten in 7 previous games at a cold Molineux stadium. Although Sam Allardyce is unlikely to use these up and coming players in the near future, his cockles will have been warmed to see that Tony Carr is still working his magic.

Speaking before the win Carr said; “There is nothing better than gaining experience in these cup tie atmosphere.” That experience is sure to lead to a bright future for these young bright talents, many of them already pulling up trees for their respective countries with Blair Turgott and Matthias Fanimo already representing the England under 18s. A call up for Elliot Lee (son of former hammer Rob Lee) is surely not too far away as he continues to impress in front of goal.

Then there is Dylan Tombides, a young Australian under 17s international striker who is currently unfortunately out for the foreseeable future with testicular cancer, and we all at West Ham of course all wish him well. Tombides is a popular member of the youth set up and has a huge future having represented his native Australia on six occasions scoring against the Ivory coast in the under 17s World Cup.

One player, who could be slightly closer to pulling on the claret and blue, is striker Robert Hall, who is currently on loan at Oxford United. Hall has been finding the back of the net on a regular occasion for the blue and yellow of Oxford, scoring five goals in 11 appearances. Hall appeared on the bench for the Hammers in the Npower fixture against Bristol City at home, but didn’t feature. Midfielder George Moncur, “monks” in the dressing room is another player who could be close to making his first team bow. Moncur son of former Hammer John featured on the bench away at Brighton, is a midfielder with an eye for a goal, also has a huge potential to be a star in the West Ham midfield in the next couple of years.

The Academy and its reputation is still there for all to see, as stated by new signing Pelly Ruddock, who signed earlier this week from non-league club Boreham Wood. The midfielder praised the clubs academy system saying; “The club’s commitment to young players did attract me. It is good at West Ham because a lot of young players have come through and gone on to do good things.”

So if all goes to plan and West Ham do get promoted, Tony Carr and scouting team may have secured a very bright future for the Irons.
