All I want for Christmas…is maximum points.

|

As we hurtle towards the midway point of the Championship season the importance of a good December is paramount, normally during the course of a season barring any disasters where you are at the half-way point isn’t too far from where you finish. Case in point last season; we were bottom after 19 games and bottom after 38.

We are a mere three games from the half-way point in this Everest and thanks to that untimely slip against Burnley not only did we for the fourth time this season blow an opportunity to go top, we also narrowed the gap between ourselves and the chasing pack from six to three points. A good December could see us re-assert a healthy point’s advantage over the play-off pack and a bad December could see us slip out of the top two.

We’ve put ourselves in a good position in which to attack the new-year; but we mustn’t slip up again this month. We were lucky that after our horrific defeat at home to Burnley that the gap to the summit remained at only two points and thanks to our point’s advantage over the chasing pack we still have a little breathing space. I do however still believe we will ultimately usurp Southampton as we have a far stronger squad and when the injuries and suspensions pile up, we’ll be in a much better position to deal with it than the Saints.

The fixture computer has been relatively good to us for this crucial festive period; as apart from Birmingham away on Boxing Day on paper there doesn’t seem to be anything to unduly concern us. Having said that who would’ve thought that Burnley at home would’ve been anything other than a fifth straight victory?

Our Boxing Day contest against the Brum will see us reach the half-way stage of this gruelling marathon. And I must say I fancy our chances in the new year…I’m heartened by the fact that Gary O’Neill, Henri Lansbury and Sam Baldock will all soon return and give us more options and depth, I’m heartened by the fact that Big Sam will be backed in the transfer window to bring in the players to get us over the finishing line and I am confident any bids for our better players will be swiftly rebuffed.

We’re firmly on course for a return to the big time.
