Hammers defeat top of the table in promotion race

|

West Ham kept themselves in the race for promotion with a fantastic 2-1 away win at league leaders Colchester United Ladies on Sunday.

The Hammers went into the match desperate for the three points in what has become a very tight push for the top of the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division.

West Ham’s win means that they are second, four points behind Colchester United but with two games in hand on their rivals. The Hammers’ success this season also lies in the hands of Portsmouth Ladies who are a point and a place behind West Ham but with one extra game to play.

All three teams still have a chance on being promoted but the upper hand now lies with the Hammers and Portsmouth as they try to make their remaining games count.

West Ham went into Sunday’s match knowing how crucial a win was and despite the adverse weather last week the game went ahead. As expected the league leaders applied pressure to the visitors but it was West Ham who took the lead when Jess Barling’s free kick took a slight deflection off a defender and found the net.

Despite withstanding pressure from the home team West Ham doubled their lead in the second half thanks again to Barling and a slice of luck. This time Barling attacked down the left and her cross could only be turned in by a defender. Colchester tried to get back into the game with a late goal but it turned out only to be a consolation effort for the home side.

West Ham’s league season will now come down to the final two games but the Hammers will have a long time to wait to find out whether they will win promotion. They face Queens Park Rangers Ladies in late January with their final league game against Brighton and Hove Albion Ladies currently scheduled for early March 2012.
