Boys are back in town?

|

It’s nearly January and the opening of the transfer window is coming up fast and rumours are circling about the return of a few old favourites to the Boleyn. Now I’m a firm believer of you never go back, as things are never going to be as good as when you left.

Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole have left us with some firm memories, I for one was at the Bradford 5-4 thriller back in February 2000 when Joe Cole bagged his first career league goal when still a baby faced boy aged just 18. From that moment he was an idol to me as I was just 8 years old. But as much as I love Joey a return for him to the club he began and captained at just 21 years old would act far more as a hindrance than a help.

His big ego and the fact he would demand a starting berth would compromise the young talent coming through, the likes of Montano and Montenegro. Although Cole’s obvious quality he isn’t getting any younger and he is prone to injury and of course with Cole playing in Europe the chances of a return are near zero for now anyway.

Rio Ferdinand is a quality defender and there is no doubt about it, he oozes quality and confidence and it says a lot about a centre half in his advancing years to still be in Capello’s England reckoning despite the young talents in Cahill and Jones coming through the ranks.

Ferdinand will always be remembered by the Hammers faithful as a young no nonsense defender who had fabulous positional sense, but a return for the former Hammer? No thanks. I believe if he was to join the club it could hurt the core of the team and disrupt the rhythm of the defence.

Although the rumours are suggesting that Rio would only be coming in during the summer transfer window should West Ham secure promotion back to the promise land. We all know that Rio isn’t getting any younger and many pundits believe he is losing his pace and is picking up more and more injuries as the season goes on. For me Ferdinand would only be here to pick up the wages in a last swansong before retirement and I would much prefer Big Sam to spend those precious wages on young talents.

However a return for Bobby Zamora seems far more logical and realistic and one I am for sure in favour of. Zamora holds many a memory for the Hammers faithful most memorably during our previous stint in the Championship, without Zamora’s goals in those play-off games who knows where we would be today.

Although Zamora can be injury prone, he still has a canny knack of finding the back of the net something we having been crying out for this season. The Hammers hopes of securing him in January were given a boost this morning when Martin Jol is said to have frozen him out the first team. Allardyce could do a lot worse than to link up Baldock with Zamora in a two pronged attack leaving Cole in his super sub role.

Another player although it seems like a pipe dream for him to return is playmaker Yossi Benayoun, the player the home fans have always said “we’ve never replaced”, would be a dream to see him re-joining the Hammers should they return to the top flight. Benayoun will always be remembered for his winning goal against Spurs to end their dreams of Champions league football at the time, a game I will never forget.

Yossi has flair and skill a plenty and could always find that killer final ball that would cut a defence in half, something West Ham haven’t had since he signed on that dotted line at Liverpool on deadline day in 2007. With him being frozen out at Chelsea will there be a chance of a return to the claret and blue in the summer, should we be promoted.

Well we can all dream can’t we?

we need some class, not another lump up front I liked bobby but that was yesterday. we have to look to today – get some pace in with abit of a touch, and we may already have youth to do that.

Every transfer window we seem to be speculatively linked with these ‘has been’ or ‘big name’ players. Often they are both has beens and bog names. Llundberg, anyone? Nolan?
Sometimes they come off and do a real job – Sheringham is stand out for me, in this department.
Generally though, and I think the author recognises this, the maxim of ‘never go back’ has not established itself as a generally held truth without foundation. It is usually folly.
We need to be forward looking. The most exciting signing of recent years is not Carew, not Piquionne, not Nolan, Diop, Demel or any number of similar names (Boa Morte, anyone?). No, it is Baldock for me. Young, hungry, quick, eye for goal and unproven at the highest level.
More of that please Sam and Sugo, not more of the cast of yesteryear!
