Which Hammers will be in 2014 WC Squad

|

By the time the next World Cup comes around, West Ham will no doubt be an established Premier League side again, with some of England’s finest home grown talent playing week in week out at Upton Park (fingers crossed). But who do you think will make the 2014 World Cup squad from our current crop of stars? Chris Henry gives you his opinion.

Tommo has had a bit of a rollercoaster ride in his few years as a West Ham player.  Only 22 years old, he’s already played under four managers and had to come up against superior strikers the likes of Fernando Torres, Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney whilst he was still in the tender phase of development.  There were a few hiccups here and there from Tomkins, notably against Bolton and Wolves, but give the kid credit as he seemed to be thrown in the deep end after the massive void that was left with the departure of James Collins.

Now James is coming into his own as a player and has come out of the shadow of his elder peers what with their departures.  With Big Sam’s focus on solid defensive display, we are seeing this rub off on Tomkins and hopefully a year in the Championship will have done him the world of good – see example of Steven Taylor at Newcastle.  It should be soon after Euro 2012 that we’ll be seeing Tommo becoming integrated slowly into the England set-up.

Freddie Sears

Burst onto the scene, making an immediate impact when scoring on his debut against Blackburn and proving to be a breath of fresh air for the team.  Some impressive displays for the rest of the campaign, it seemed Freddie had lived up to the hype that had surrounded him.  Things seemed to dip for Freddie after that and there were concerns that he might be a bit too lightweight for the Premiership.

A year out in the Championship with Palace gave him some solid experience and he returned to first team action with some exciting performances, but this time on the right wing!  His pace caused a lot of full backs, particularly Ashley Cole, a bag of problems and he proved himself to be a handful.  I think now the right wing suits him more as a player and it is in that role where I believe he’ll find success and growth in for West Ham, and hopefully England.

Jordan Spence

This young centre back, currently on loan to Bristol City, has caught the eye of many Hammer fans.

Broke into the team towards the end of last season but was bizarrely placed at right back by Avram Grant for an important Premiership tie with hardly any real experience on the big stage.

His assured defensive displays in the youth set-up has drawn him comparisons to a young Rio Ferdinand.  Capped for England at U16, U17, U18 and U19 levels; only a matter of time before he makes the next step up.

Interesting fact about him – the only player to score a winning goal for England against Brazil at a FIFA tournament at any level.

Sam Baldock

Finally broke his scoring duck at Upton Park against Blackpool, Baldock should no doubt prove his worth in goals this season for the money Big Sam splashed out on him. Looks to have had a good goal ratio with former club MK Dons considering how young he is still, hopefully this season will see him become a fans favourite at the Boleyn Ground.

Regarding England, Sam has already appeared as a sub for England at U20 level in the FIFA U20 World Cup Finals, it really depends on how Sam adapts to the Premiership, if we do hopefully make an immediate return.  Still time is on his side.

I can safely say that not a single one of our current crop of home grown players will be anywhere near good enough to play in the 2014 World Cup, and I’d bet my house one it unfortunately.
