Defeat sees Hammers slip down table

|

West Ham Ladies’ push to reach the top of the FA Women’s Premier League South took a blow on Sunday after a shock 2-1 home defeat against Colchester United Ladies.

The loss sees the Hammers slip to 4th in the league table, five points off league leaders Brighton and Hove Albion Ladies but only one point behind Sunday’s opponents and now second placed Colchester.

West Ham took the lead in the game in the eleventh minute thanks to an excellent left-footed drive from Lindsey Morgan. Despite applying some pressure on the Colchester defence in search of that second goal the Hammers couldn’t break through again in a tight first half. Unfortunately that proved costly as their opponents hit back with two second half goals, the winner coming in the 80th minute.
The defeat is a big blow for the Hammers in their push for promotion as they lose ground on the leaders. But there is still plenty of time for the Ladies to turn it around, with their next chance a home game against Tottenham Hotspur Ladies next Sunday. This match against a team only one place and a single point behind them in 5this a tough encounter for West Ham but gives them a chance to push back up the table.

Elsewhere in the division leaders Brighton continued to set the pace with a 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers Ladies, Portsmouth Ladies and Gillingham Ladies’ game ended in a draw and the Hammers’ next opponents Tottenham also suffered a shock home defeat against Plymouth Argyle Ladies.
