West Ham Awards 2010…And The Winner Is?

|

To be perfectly honest, given the year West Ham have just had, well, I was just about ready to postpone the awards ceremony, go into hibernation, and wake up sometime in late May and pray the Hammers haven’t been relegated. But, alas, the show must go on and I am an eternal optimist and hope that the Irons can make 2011 a far better year than 2010 has been. For a start it would be great to get higher than 13th in a calendar year (in the Premier League that is). So without further moaning about what a terrible year it has been, here are my West Ham end of Year Awards;

Best Player

Ok, a nice easy one to start off with. There really is only one player that this could go to, Hammer of the Year, and the first man to successfully bring a side-parting back to the football pitch in the post-war era, Scott Parker. There’s nothing I can say that hasn’t been said about this man, he really IS West Ham, without him, we would struggle, well, more than we are already. Honourable mentions must go to Robert Green, despite his much publicised foul-up in the World Cup, he has barely put a foot wrong for the Hammers, and quite rightly gave a good ole fashioned forearm jerk to the media section after his immaculate performance in a 1-0 win over Spurs in September.

Most improved

For me it has to be James Tomkins. He had a terrible back end to last season as he picked up an injury in the 3-1 home loss against Wolves, where he also was horrendously at fault for one of the goals. Fast forward to August and the start of the new season, and he is like a changed man, and has gone from strength to strength in his role next to Matthew Upson in the centre of the Irons’ defence, and the 21 year-old looks like one for the future.

Most Disappointing

The most disappointing player for me in 2010 was, although I am a fan of the man, Carlton Cole, and the disappointment stems mainly from his promise. In some games he seems like he could grab a goal from anywhere, and gives defenders a torrid time, yet in other games he barely seems like he wants to be on the pitch. After a stellar performance in the away game at Fulham, I hope, if he is not sold in January, that he can really get going in 2011 and prove his doubters wrong.
