West Ham defender Jose Fonte says the players failed to implement manager Slaven Bilic’s game plan against Manchester City in the 4-0 defeat on Wednesday night.

The 33 year old made a shaky debut against City, giving away a penalty in the second half for Yaya Toure to score the fourth goal, and talking to the Sun he revealed that things certainly didn’t go as they wanted to:

“We worked on a game plan during the week and when the game started we did not apply it. We tried to over play in areas that the manager said not to.”

The Hammers face Fonte’s former side Southampton at St Mary’s tomorrow afternoon, and it is uncertain how the Portuguese international will be received by the Saints fans.

The centre back played for the south coast club for seven years and helped the club to promotion twice, and to finish in their highest ever position in the Premier League. After rejecting a new contract to stay and join West Ham however, it will be interesting to see the reception he gets if he does, as expected, start the match.
