West Ham co-owner David Gold believes that the January transfer window should be scrapped to prevent what he sees as players holding clubs to ransom by trying to force a transfer mid way through the season.

Hammers midfielder Dimitri Payet looks to have played his last game for the club after manager Slaven Bilic revealed that the 29 year old has refused to play amid interest from former club Marseille. He said on Twitter:

“With a number of top Premier League players holding clubs to ransom is it time to close the January transfer window?”

Payet was bought from the French club for £11million in the summer of 2015. West Ham are reported to have held talks with Marseille about a possible deal but two offers have been rejected; the latest of which was believed to be £20million.

The French international was not part of the squad for the club’s 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend, and it has also been suggested that his wife and family have moved back to France in the expectation that a return to Marseille will take place before the end of this month.
