West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet has been forced to train with the Under 23s, and has been told to apologise if he wants to come back to the senior squad, according to the Evening Standard.

Marseille reportedly were £10m short of the club’s £30million asking price with their latest bid, and it looks like there is a possibility he will have to stay at the club until the end of the season when the Hammers could perhaps sell the player closer to the fee they are looking for.

Reintegrating players into the squad after a transfer request is fraught with difficulty. No doubt Payet’s reputation with the fans will be permanently tarnished but it is not unprecedented for players to return to play for a club they had refused to play for again.

Carlos Tevez most notably went AWOL after a fallout with Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini and returned to play, but it is usually the case once a player commits to such a step they will leave the club sooner rather than later.
