West Ham United have confirmed via their official website that the club have signed Edimilson Fernandes from Swiss side FC Sion.

The 20-year-old has penned a four-year deal with Slaven Bilic’s men and the fee is believed to be in the region of £5.5 million.

Fernandes is the cousin of former Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes and is being tipped to have a big impact in east London.

The all-action starlet is able to play as a central midfielder or on the right flank and has impressed with his physical attributes in Switzerland.

Bilic has hailed the new man’s capture and admitted that West Ham have been monitoring Fernandes for some time ahead of a potential transfer.

“Fernandes is a good, young midfielder. We’ve watched him for a year now and we’ve bought him to be part of the squad this year,” the Croatian said.

“He has good pace, good skill, good talent and he is a good signing for us at a great age.”

The new arrival will give the West Ham coach an extra option in the heart of his side’s midfield, with last season’s stalwarts Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate having competition from summer signings Fernandes and Havard Nordtveit.
