West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing Torino centre-half Nikola Maksimovic but face competition from Chelsea in a bid to land the star, The Mirror reports.

The Hammers are looking to strengthen their squad in a number of areas before the transfer window closes at the end of next month, with a new central defender a welcome addition.

Following the sale of James Tomkins to Crystal Palace, Slaven Bilic has one less option at the heart of his rearguard.

Maksimovic is a Serbia international and has impressed for the over-achieving Turin side in recent campaigns.

What makes West Ham’s interest all the more interesting is the fact that Angelo Ogbonna played alongside the eastern European in their time with the Serie A club – a partnership that could work well in east London.

Chelsea are believed to be weighing up an offer for Maksimovic also as a cut-price alternative to Napoli enforcer Kalidou Koulibaly.
