Seydou-Doumbia-600x400

According to Football Italia, West Ham have contacted Roma about the possibility of taking Seydou Doumbia on loan for next season with a view to a €14 million permanent move.

The Ivory Coast international has struggled since arriving at Roma this January, scoring just two goals in 13 Serie A appearances. Despite this rather unimpressive record, Doumbia was attracting interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe before he joined the Italian giants.

The former CSKA Moscow player bagged a prolific 24 goals in 26 league appearances in the past one and a half seasons for the Russian side, relying on his blistering pace and excellent finishing, making him one of the best goal-scorers in Europe.

Many fans will know Doumbia after he scored an impressive Champions League double to beat Manchester City at the Etihad back in November 2014. The striker may be intrigued by a move to the Premier League and the pace of England’s top division will certainly suit the 27-year-old.

The loan option will also appeal to West Ham as they look to invest the transfer budget in other areas of the squad, prioritising a top quality centre-back to strengthen the heart of the Hammers’ defence.

It looks as if West Ham may face competition from Watford in the race for Doumbia’s signature. The striker has played a bit-part role for Roma, playing over 85 minutes on just three occasions in Serie A but his goal-scoring pedigree for CSKA Moscow should not be ignored and a potential loan move does not represent much of a gamble.

Is Doumbia the type of player West Ham need?
