David Sullivan - West Ham chairman

It’s been a quiet day for West Ham United in terms of player recruitment. It’s almost a welcome relief considering the Hammers have been linked with a large amount of players in recent weeks as the rumour mill is almost overflowing due to the appointment of a new manager and West Ham’s desire to introduce more attacking football next season.

David Sullivan has spoken about signing new players and confirmed on whufc.com that bids for players will be made soon:

“I hope we will have a few more players with one of two very exciting signings. We will be making bids for players and will see what will develop over the coming weeks.

“We know we need to strengthen the squad and have competition for places. We are not panicking and know we have plenty of time.”

From the joint-chairman’s comments, it looks as if West Ham are ready to up their efforts in terms of bringing in new faces for next season. There still remains an element of uncertainty surrounding who the Hammers have bid for, with the likes of Yohan Cabaye, Loic Remy, Charlie Austin and Dimitri Payet all linked with the club in recent days.

Sullivan mentioned how the club would look to sign up free agents who would receive excellent wage packets. So far, the players linked are not free agents but that doesn’t dismiss the fact that the Irons will look to sign the best players they can with the budget available to them.

The likes of Cabaye, Remy and Payet are all rumoured to be available for either £10 million or less and this certainly works in favour in terms of West Ham’s budget. The Hammers could really do with a player of Payet’s creative ability but his wage demands are understood to be a hindrance. However, with a bid of around £6 million likely to be accepted, West Ham should really focus on bringing in a French international that does not look out of place when his stats are compared to some of the world’s best.

Although these are exciting targets, there has been no concrete evidence to suggest that West Ham have actually bid for these players despite various newspapers reporting different stories. It seems as if the Hammers will be a real focus in terms of transfer activity this summer which will only increase the amount of completely rubbish and unfounded rumours connected with the club’s transfer activity.

Although the Hammers are not very close to signing anybody just yet, Sullivan’s words should be good news for most fans as there is an overall feeling around the club that Slaven Bilic will bring entertaining, expansive football back to the club, and how we have missed it!

In other news, West Ham have appointed Chris Woods as the club’s new goalkeeper coach. The 55- year-old has a wealth of experience, working at Everton and Manchester United over the past two decades. Woods is one of the reasons behind David De Gea’s superb form this season and if he can bring similar success to Adrian, who is already a very fine goalkeeper, it can only be a positive appointment for the Hammers.

Plenty of time – really – 2-3 weeks our Europa challenge starts – some suggested we could use it as pre season – whilst im sure Sullivan has targets in mind one would think given our circumstances we might want to show some haste – hopefully we still have on board the people who identified last seasons targets because for the most part they were fantastic for value and in what they delivered to the squad and team – but last season we started with Zarate, Valencia and Sakho unfit and unavailable for 3-4 weeks, Jenks unvetted by Sam and never saw him for 6-8 weeks and Song came late with no preseason – given we have had no manager for a month Bilic targets have only just been identified, having time this year for the squad to work with Bilic is imperative given his style is in contrast to Sam’s and we will need to hit the ground running – my point is we were slow out of the blocks last season when it comes to new faces being ready to front the PL, this season starts sooner anyway and we have Europa and a new management style to contend with – WH will need to have the majority of their signings at the club for pre season, any late comers should be those brought in using funds generated as new business forces some old faces no longer required out of the door and those last minute negotiations that bring quality and value to the season with loans or finalised deals that have drawn out – WH dont need to mess around this season – As for targets – WH don’t need Austin, not at 15 mil, Sakho at 4 mil would have been as prolific last season if not for injury, that’s value WH should be looking for again, even Remy would be cheaper than Austin, and Ba although aging, he still scored 18 in 25 odd last season thus better value for his contribution in goals and good competition for the front line, and why WH aren’t running to get Song for 5-6 mil as is being touted is beyond me, that is a bargain that under Bilic and his style will be a huge benefit to us, Cabeye would be nice and don’t know why Konoplyanka (on a free) isn’t a target either, imagine him, Payet, Song, Kouyate, Obiang, Cabaye as midfield options, with Downing, Nobes and Amalfitano as cover, dont fancy Cambiasso at 34 if those rumours are anything to go by, don’t need a CD seeing as we have 5 already in Collins, Reid, Tonks, Burke and Henry, and Kouyate slips in easily for emergencies, don’t fancy Corluka anyway, we certainly need 2 more decent forwards to add to the 3 we have and at RB Jenks on loan has to be the cheapest option we already know does a decent job, but we will need more cover there, we already have Hendry but more depth is a must – Nolan, Jarvis and Obrien must already know they are surplus and will have to re-evaluate their futures if they want to play – some food for thought people – COYI

Call me a dreamer, but considering old’ sully wants an exciting signing. How about we really push for Tevez? If you think, the wages that Carroll and Nolan are on, shouldn’t that cover it? I mean Carroll is on a suspected 90k a week alone. I’m sure Tevez would be willing to come back to his beloved West Ham, especially considering the promising signs the club is showing. I just think it would be a very attractive business plan as well considering Tevez’s huge fan base which undoubtedly would bring in more profit from the sale of merchandise. It’s just something for you to think about Dave.

I suppose, but then again a player of Teves quality will always attract richer clubs
