West Ham must keep chasing their top target

Rafael Benitez

Footballing snobbery would determine that the science behind selecting a suitable manager for a club stretches way beyond the understandings of the common supporter.

Equations around win ratios, salary expenses verses transfer revenue, goals per game stats, and so on; no doubt all come into a board’s calculations.

But on a simplified level, Rafa Benitez seems to tick all the basic boxes required to be West Ham’s next manager.

At a time when Messieurs Gold and Sullivan are constantly talking about moving the club to the ‘next level’, a Champions League-winning coach would certainly provide the push the squad so badly needs.

He has both extensive European and Premier League experience. Tick. He has won trophies. Tick. He is likeable. Tick. Coached and promoted young home-grown talent. Tick. Respected by players. Tick.

No clever maths needed, he would quite clearly be a substantial step up in class compared to recent managers at the Boleyn.

The major stumbling block however, is the prize value of the current Napoli boss has not gone unnoticed by other clubs.

With it looking certain that he will leave the Italian club, teams including most recently Real Madrid, have been put on alert.

It would take a lot of persuading by the power-that-be to sell him the new West Ham ideal, and coax him away from one of the World’s biggest brands.

Already options such as Jürgen Klopp and David Moyes have distanced themselves from alleged approaches by the East End club.

Klopp has announced he will be departing Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season. His high level experience is likely to be looked upon extremely favorably by the West Ham board, despite his lack of exposure to the English game.

Moyes on the other hand, is well versed in the rigors of the Premier League, after his spells at Everton and Manchester United, but appears set on staying at Real Sociedad where he has achieved relative success during his first season in charge.

A seemingly popular choice mooted amongst fans was for the club to appoint Teddy Sheringham. The former Hammer has been on the coaching staff as ‘attacking advisor’ for the past year, and some had suggested he should get a chance at the top. However, his lack of managerial roles would have meant it was a risk, and he has now become the new Stevenage boss.

All this leaves Benitez as the stand-out candidate to potentially become the next West Ham manager.

And if the figures add up, the appointment of the Spaniard could result in a hugely positive period in The Hammers’ history.

West Ham fans do concern me at times in regard to their sanity, who in their right mind would suggest Sheringham was up to the job at this stage.
