According to reports from London 24, West Ham are amongst a number of Premier league clubs tracking Celtic centre-back Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender has made it clear that he wants a move to the Premier League and England is his preferred destination this summer.

The 23-year-old has been in very impressive form for Celtic this season and sees the Premier League as the perfect platform to take his career to the next level.

“I want to develop. If the opportunity is there, I would definitely consider a transfer.

“But maybe there will be nothing.”

Chances are there will be a lot of interest in the talented centre-back, who is valued at around £10 million. Arsenal are rumoured to be keen but West Ham also remain an attractive option.

The Hammers can offer regular first team football for a player of van Dijk’s class, something that may not be offered in abundance at Arsenal. It makes sense for West Ham to make a move for the Dutchman as recent injuries to James Tomkins and Winston Reid has left the club with no option but to play Reece Burke and James Collins at the back. Although the partnership of Collins and Burke has been a success, West Ham should be looking to add further strength in depth to the Hammers’ back line this summer.

The quicker West Ham resolve the managerial situation, the more of a chance they have of competing with other Premier League clubs for a player of van Dijk’s quality.
