Does he deserve another chance at West Ham?

Mauro Zarate

Mauro Zarate really kicked off his West Ham career in brilliant style after that superb volley against Crystal Palace in a memorable 3-1 victory at Selhurst Park earlier in the season.

That was as good as it was going to get for Zarate in a Hammers shirt as he found it difficult to break into the first team despite a lot of fans calling for him to feature on a more consistent basis. Allardyce didn’t seem to fancy the tricky forward and he was shipped off to Queens Park Rangers in January.

His spell with the relegated club capped off a rather disappointing season for the striker as Harry Redknapp criticised the striker’s lack of fitness and looked to send him back to West Ham in a bid to sign Emmanuel Adebayor on transfer deadline day.

Although Zarate didn’t exactly cover himself in glory at QPR, a return to West Ham and the potential of a fresh start under a new manager next season could be good news for both the player and West Ham United. He never really got much of a chance under Allardyce despite his undoubted ability and Zarate has shown in the past that he is not a player that is always willing to fight for his place.

However, if Zarate gets another opportunity at Upton Park next season it could be like a new signing for the Hammers. He is a flair player that is clearly capable of producing the spectacular and at times in the latter half of this current season, West Ham could have really benefitted from Zarate’s ability to open up defences and chip in with the odd goal here and there.

Some fans may feel that he had his chance and blew it but I still think he hasn’t given up on playing for the Hammers. He was effectively neglected by Allardyce and it was no real surprise that a player of that individual quality began to lose heart at a club where he should realistically be playing regular football.

It could be another Ravel Morrison case but Zarate does deserve another chance to prove himself at West Ham. If he is played up front in his preferred position, Hammers fans could see more of a player that genuinely excited them, something that has been noticeably absent from first team affairs recently.

Here’s a reminder of what the forgotten man can do:

Ridiculous question . How can anyone possibly know . Not given a chance. Can’t be worse than Cole , Jarvis , Noble or Nolan .

Given that Harry Redknapp tried to send him back to West Ham before leaving QPR and Joey Barton named him as one of the 5 players at QPR who took the money and did not try, I cannot imagine why anyone would want him in their team at any price. Taraapt is also going very cheap!
