Stewart Downing goalAs England get ready for their European Championship qualifier against Slovenia, West Ham fans will be taking a keen interest in how their rejuvenated midfielder Stewart Downing will be involved in the game. Downing has been called up for England after a two-year absence, and as he’s currently sitting on top of the world (okay the league table) with West Ham United, he’s a player with a lot to offer to England.

Here’s three things that Stewart Downing can bring to England’s starting XI, should he be included in it on Saturday.

Midfield Magic

Downing has been an integral part of the new lease on life that West Ham United are currently experiencing. Part of this is the goals, which are great, but a big part of this is the energy he’s providing in the new role, and how often he’s moving the ball forward. I’d argue that his crosses have also improved since last season, and all of this has combined to make Downing a true threat – irrespective of whether he’s playing against a club or a country.

That Sleek Physique

It has to be said that when Downing bared all but what was behind the ball for the ‘Feel Em Friday’ campaign photo, he showed off a good looking bod, but seriously, the man is in the best shape of his career. He looks physically stronger than last year, and has played a full 90 minutes in all but one league game this year – in that one game, he only lasted for 89 minutes against Palace. The man is a machine. Get him on the pitch for England ASAP.

Goals

The best thing about Downing this season is that his new position has led to him playing a role in a third of the goals that West Ham have scored so far. West Ham have scored 19 league goals this season, and six of them were either scored by or set-up by Downing. This year, he has scored two Premier League goals for West Ham and also has a whopping four Premier League assists to his name.

He also was influential in West Ham coming back from being two goals down at Stoke City. In this game, Downing scored one and set up Enner Valencia’s goal to get a precious point for the Hammers. Should England find themselves going behind against Slovenia (stranger things have happened), rest assured that Downing doesn’t quit, and has a lot to offer to a score sheet.

It’s great news for Downing that he’s been noticed for his hard work on the pitch, and let’s hope that now that West Ham are a top four club, we’ll get to see one of our own deservedly take to the pitch for his country.
