Premier League rival bids £7million for West Ham ace

Andy Carroll and Matt Jarvis (West Ham)The Mirror is reporting that West Bromwich Albion are interested in West Ham winger Matt Jarvis, after he was reportedly deemed surplus to requirements at Upton Park. This is a surprising development to come a week before our season begins, especially given that Jarvis has featured strongly in West Ham’s pre-season games (with the exception of Sampdoria, in which we didn’t even see him on the bench. Go on; read into that, I won’t stop you.)

Jarvis impressed in his five years at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but this reported offer poses an interesting question – when it comes to our affable winger, would you take the money and run? Or does Jarvis still have a role to play at Upton Park?

Jarvis has made 57 appearances in his two years at the club, and has scored six goals in all competitions. His crosses have been both lauded and loathed, and so there is some feeling he hasn’t always lived up to his £7.5 million (up to £10 million with add-ons) price tag.

Word on the streets (okay, Twitter) is that West Brom would be prepared to offer £7 for the 28-year-old, which is a high figure given it’s just a wee bit under what we paid for him in the first place. If true, it’s not a number to be scoffed at, but is Jarvis worth £7million pounds to us still?

I still think he has more to offer to the Hammers, and also that we don’t have a suitable alternative to him currently waiting in the wings (get it?) We have a plethora of midfielders, but few are ball crossers – which is a shame, as our one-up-front plan requires good ball service.

Jarvis may be up for the move, as he must be getting tired of spending his weekends (and occasional Monday nights) being screamed at from the touchline by Big Sam; but it’s hard to see how this rumour could have strong legs. We don’t have a replacement for Matt Jarvis, and although Big Sam is extremely tough on him, he remains one of Sam’s hand-picked players.

I for one hope to still see him in our claret and blue next week, but I also know that a large offer is one that would need some consideration.

What would you do with Jarvis? Has he done enough for what we paid for him, and is there still more to come? Or would you rather have the money? Let us know below.

I think he had 2 assists last year and 1 the year before, can’t cross with his left, not very good at shooting, has Carlton Cole as a target who is pure pants. Na we will keep him.

Get rid, he’s been shit since he arrived , get back in for Yevhen konoplyanka for fuck sake .hes mustard. We made a bid and didn’t follow up , we supposed to be strengthening the squad and now we getting desperate and looking at shit players ,

    • Simon says:

Agreed, Konoplyanka is mustard and could easily replace Jarvis – Diame is also being linked with a move, meaning west ham could still look at bringing in both Wickham, and maybe Sakho to replace Vaz Te and CCole who both need to go, and Amalfitano can still be brought in as an option for midfield. If west ham really want to progress then Vaz Te and CCole have to be moved along.

i really dont get the support of Jarvis. on a human level of course, he seems like a nice guy. But on a professional level he’s failed to impress time after time.
His crosses are wayward, his shooting’s poor. … He’s fast that’s for sure, but he flatters to deceive and ends up with no end product too often.

i think its good for all parties if he moves on and we get someone more effective. its a good opportunity to recover some money and fill in the several open gaps we still have to fill. eg. CB, CF, LM, LB.

Too be fair, Jarvis has hardly had much to cross too.

He gets booed off the pitch, when he’s substituted because he hasn’t done much, but some games he gets in the position, but no-one passes to him

Maybe when Valencia is on the pitch they’ll be a target man to aim for !!!

What I find really depressing is the potential when he came was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Atee3HsFy8 fantastic; scoring lots goals by being in the right place at the right time, confident and lots of (undisputed) speed. When he 1st came, no-one passed the ball to him. What was their problem?? He never properly got the chance to show his incredible skill + speed at taking on full backs. As time progressed, he became a liability when tracked back in defence – hopeless! – but greatly improved on that. One on Ones…no good…superb at beating defenders, but the resultant crosses not all that good…
I was thrilled with him at 1st and flummoxed and appalled at the clear deliberate lack of ball supply to him…
It begs the sad question; what have the Hammers done to him to all but kill off that fantastic talent? I don’t blame Jarvis – he’s decent, grateful and willing.
We need to rectify that and get him shining like he proved at Wolves. Jarvis deserves that, and West Ham benefit too – a complete win-win….Let’s end this crazy waste of a proven fantastic talent!
I want to see him stay, but let the club and supporters give him thorough support. If not, he deserves better elsewhere (sadly).

How many players in the last few years have come to West Ham, and not met the mark, or fulfilled their potential or promise? Too many. That’s the bloody problem. WHY is the question that needs answering before we repeat the exercise!

  • Joe the Hammer says:

Ol’ story…… the Allardyce factor. Play them out of position and not playing a style that suits the players he has negates them to less than ordinary. We have some pretty great players on paper, they do not perform with us, but they do at other clubs…… IMHO

  • John Tyler says:

For that money, it’s a no brainer.
Sell him along with MAIGA,VAZ TE, COLE & DIAME, use the monies raised and buy ZAHA, BERAHINO, AMALFATINO & REDMOND
Job done, lots of pace and all proven in the Premier League.
