Winston ReidPre-season is well underway for West Ham and as the Hammers have now touched down safely in Winston Reid’s home of New Zealand for their tour for Football United, I’m hoping that we have convinced that very same centre-back to remain a Hammer even further in the future.

Currently, Reid is contracted to the club until 2015, but Sky Sports have reported that there is interest in the defender from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Manchester United, so West Ham will need to put quite a strong offer on the table to ensure he stays put in east London.

It’s no surprise that Reid is a top target for most teams. He’s been crucial for West Ham over the past few seasons. Most of West Ham’s clean sheets can be credited to the strength he shows in defending, and he is consistent in his performances. He has had to come back from a tough injury in this past season, after taking significant time off to recover from ankle surgery. Since then, he hasn’t quite gotten back to his best, but a player of his strength and determination should be ready to go for the start of the next season— and West Ham need to hold on to the man who is arguably their best defender.

As well as having performed wonderfully in the past, Reid is an integral part of West Ham’s future. He is crucial for West Ham’s aims to break into the top ten this season, and I would love for him to commit to a long term deal with us, and be one of the players still running out on to the pitch once we head to the Olympic Stadium.

Fortunately, Sky Sports and other sports news outlets are also reporting that West Ham have in fact offered him a new long term contract. Although the details are not being specifically reported on as of yet, it is understood that the new deal would represent a significant increase in wages.

For now, whilst Reid is mulling over this new offer, it will be nice for the captain of New Zealand’s All Whites to be able to play for his club in his home country, and doing that will hopefully serve to strength the bond between the player and club— and as soon as he gets back to London, it’d be good to put pen to paper so he can concentrate on the upcoming season.

As a footnote: I must say how sorry I am for the friends and families of the two Newcastle supporters killed on their flight out to see this very same pre-season tour. If there is a tribute for those two fans on the tour, I very much hope to see West Ham partaking in it.

I’m trying to keep relaxed about this.

All the so called “Interest” seems to be coming from the papers and other social media outlets. (Mo Diame anyone?).

Reid’s contract is coming to an end and we have reportedly offered him a new much improved one. And that’s about it really!

The only thing you could say is we might have left it a tad late in getting down go business. But as we don’t really know the insides story we just have go trust the board knows what it’s doing.

Apart from that, there’s not much else to say!

I’d be amazed if any of the above mentioned teams went for him. Sometimes, a good defender stands out in a mediocre team…Gary Cahill at Bolton for instance…and a bigger club rescue them from constant relegation fights and lower table finishes but I don’t see it here though. Maybe he’ll get a move to a slightly bigger team, Southampton, Newcastle or Villa but I can’t see a top six or seven team wanting him.
