Antonio Rudiger

Who Are Ya?!

Antonio Rudiger is a German international (sort of) who currently plays for VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. He is 21-years-old, and plays as a centre-back. He has experience of the Europa League with VfB Stuttgart and has represented Germany from Under 18’s up to senior level (1 appearance). He currently plays for the Under 21 side, finding it difficult to break into the new World Cup winners’ side permanently.

Big Sam, Spend Some Money?!

Reportedly, VfB Stuttgart are holding out for a fee of around £8million for Rudiger as he is a hot future prospect. It is also reported that West Ham have already had a previous offer “immediately rejected”. Rudiger is currently under contract until 2017 and therefore he certainly won’t be moving for cheap.

Believability Factor

A short while ago, a transfer of £8million would have been reserved for a British winger. However, West Ham have now seemingly been granted a cash injection and are throwing their cash all around the world, anything is possible. OK – maybe not anything, but it certainly wouldn’t be a shocking signing, and if you can lock a 21-year-old down for 5+ years, you’re likely to get your monies worth (and perhaps make a profit when sold on). It’s believable, if not necessary.

Game Changer?

West Ham’s defence was a lonely positive for the most part of last season. Defensive frailties were present during parts of the season and combined with the inability to score, the Hammers didn’t enjoy the last campaign. There is every chance that a 21-year-old German centre-half can strengthen West Ham’s defence immensely. The large fee is a risk but you have to take risks when you want to progress.

What do you think of £8million for a young central defender?
