Lets hope West Ham fans are never like Southampton’s

Kevin NolanI would not usually comment on other teams as much as is possible, and certainly not their supporters, but in this article I am going to make an exception as I hope it serves as a warning as to what can happen to a set of supporters when their team starts enjoying some success.

The reaction of a large number of Southampton fans to the 3-1 defeat their side suffered at the hands of West Ham on Saturday was to be embarrassingly bitter. More than that, it underlined an almost disturbing arrogance from supporters who should know a lot better.

I realise of course that this won’t apply to all Saints supporters, many of whom will appreciate where they came from, and be able to analyse their sides performance without rose tinted spectacles.

Nonetheless the constant cries of ‘hoof’ were hard to ignore at the game, a pitiful attempt to mock the Hammers perceived direct style of play. Naturally nothing was shouted on the frequent occasions any Southampton player hit a high ball up the pitch.

After the match, I read the comments from Southampton supporters about the game in KUMBs ‘opposition view’ article. The lack of class and sheer arrogance of many of these was astonishing. Most went down the route of criticising the Hammers physicality and negative football as the chief reason why their side lost. These are a couple of comments that give you a general gist of what was being said: (all courtesy of KUMB)

“I hate West Ham…Terrible area, terrible club, terrible style of football. We were far better than them but they won because of there style of football and their ability to know where to put the ball to be effective.”

“So we lost to a Neanderthal football team. So what. The linesman missing offside was a game changer. I think they wouldn’t have scored the second if they hadn’t been gifted the first. They had one game, win the ball and hit it up front.”

Then the best of the lot:

“They won, but I can tell you this, if my team played this way I would give up going.”

What a supporter you are.

I then had a look at some Southampton forums and found many more opinions of the same ilk. My question to these fans is; just who do you think you are? You would have thought that supporters of a club that, after years of scrapping for survival in the Premier League, to then get relegated and even drop as far down as League 1 only three seasons ago, would have a sense of perspective and some humility. I actually used to admire Southampton in their days of constantly fighting relegation battles and staying up year after year against the odds.

If ever a reality check was needed I think this would be the time. Sitting mid-table in the Premier League after half a decent season, and the keeper passing the ball out to your defenders rather than kicking it long does not make you Barcelona.

I was at the game on Saturday and this is what I saw: Yes often the ball would be hit up to Carlton Cole which was a good tactic as none of the Southampton defenders seemed to be able to cope with it. But then the big striker would invariably either chest the ball down and lay it off to a teammate, or flick it on with his head. Once in possession, particularly in the first half, we would try and create an opening on the flanks, through…yes clever passing and one twos before a cross came into the box. How outrageous.

When I have watched Southampton this season one of their main tactics for creating chances seems to me to hit the ball up to Rickie Lambert at the far post to head down to a teammate. I don’t blame them for this as it is effective. Yet when we use a similar tactic with Carlton Cole it’s suddenly ‘Neanderthal’ football.

There seemed to be a point blank refusal by a lot of Saints fans that Mauricio Pochettino could possibly have been out thought and outmanoeuvred by his English counterpart, yet that is what any neutral observer would have seen.

My main point in writing this is that I do not want a similar attitude ever emerging amongst the West Ham faithful, and to show how ludicrous it is. At the very least wait until your side has had a bit of success until you can look down on other teams in this way. Banter yes of course is great, but not an attitude that your side has some divine right to look down on the opposition.

one of the worst and most bias article i have ever read. Southampton are widely known to play some of the most attractive football in the premier league, you simply can not compare West Ham with Southampton. I do not see complaints by managers or articles in the media relating to any sort of negativity towards the way Southampton play and yet the way West Ham play is becoming famous. I am simply praying that the likes of West Ham/Aston Villa get relegated and find themselves in difficulty. If these tactics continue to pay off then more teams will copy the tactics of ‘hoof, header, goal’ and football will become extremely boring and ruin the sport.

On your point of Southampton’s history, it is irrelevant. Southampton’s financial difficulties are over and find themselves as one of the richest clubs in the UK. Secondly, performances especially against the bigger teams have outlined the quality that Southampton possess. Again, nothing has been said in regards to West Ham on this matter.

Love the fact you attempted to argue the Southampton manager was outclassed. How is that possible when Sam changed none of his usual tactics? HOOF. You are very much deluded if you believe that neutrals would think West Ham deserved the win, i certainly did not.

There is also a lot of contradictory in your poor article particularly seen in your belief that Southampton use similar tactics and yet you somehow correctly identified that Southampton tend to play the ball from the back – Barcelona style (not ability before you try to say i said differently). Surely that cant true then?

Southampton have had success, more than West Ham if you wish to look at recently history. Southampton are above you in the league, have a massively higher potential in squad than you, more money than you and outplayed you. Southampton fans therefore have every right to feel upset and angered that they left with nothing, never mind 3 points. They can also argue that your equaliser was offside, which it was, and therefore should have remained 1-0 up and the game would have become very different, but we will never know how different.

In summary, your proud article remains very much a joke. Ask and reasonably intellectual individual and they will say Southampton should have AT LEAST drew. It seems that you are in fact deeply hurt by the chants directed at you by HOOF because deep down in your heart you know that your football is nothing short of awful and boring. You say you never want your kin to become like Southampton fans…im sure very recently many West Ham fans were asking for Sam’s head for his tactics – more bias. I am also very sure the number of arrests and violence between comparing both sets of fans shows who are more aggressive and cause more bodily harm than the other. Can you guess? I certainly wouldnt want my fellow supporters to become a large majority of thugs.

Please dont get all jealous of clubs becoming bigger than you, it is becoming an easier task daily, you have to accept and learn that you are no longer a big club. Southampton accepted that and look at them now – above you in every way (bar arrests).

Lets all pray you do not receive a higher rated job in journalism, we get enough rubbish in the media as it is. I shall leave you with the words you tear up with seeing…HOOF.

Clearly I’ve touched a nerve here…talking of jokes ‘Southampton are widely known to play some of the most attractive football in the Premier League’ haha. And here’s silly old me thinking that the likes of Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool played the most attractive football! But no everyone would rather watch Southampton play

      • Dave says:

Recent PL Poll put Saints 2nd behind Man City in when fans where asked “what opposing team are the most enjoyable to watch”

West Ham used to be extremely well regarded in the same way. The “Hooff” shouts are more of a lament at a shared ethic lost.

I am certain that Saints fans are not the only ones to shout “hoof” but perhaps there is some jealousy going on their. The

The next chant that you will regularly hear is “your grounds to big for you”…this will annoy you because once again it will be correct. Your only hope is that a generation of dull pragmatic football makes way for a “success” greater than you have enjoyed at the Boleyn Ground.

      • Will says:

Wow. I thought so. I was hoping as an apparent journalist you might have come up with something slightly more intellectual rather than reading into anything you can for a response. Clearly you know little about football to believe that Southampton aren’t known to play good football. But i guess as a West Ham fan, you haven’t experienced this and therefore do not know what this is. I did NOT say Southampton played the best football, but Southampton are known to be SOME of the best football in the premier league.

        • James Coker says:

The point of the article wasn’t to argue about who had the better style of football. Although I’d argue that Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, Everton, Spurs at the very least are ‘known’ to play better football than Southampton. The main point was that many of your fans seem to think Southampton are gods gift to the world just because their mid table in the Prem (including yourself). As if your the purest of them all. In fact you have achieved precisely nothing. When you’ve won some trophies then you may have some right to speak as if your Barcelona – which by the way passing the ball from the back does not mean duplicating their style. The only comparison I make with saints and barca is the number of dives the two teams make

    • Spider says:

Let’s deal with some facts and also talk history.
You’re potential in your squad means little when you will sell your best players – as you are so keen on history, you will know this to be true (Walcott,Bridge,Bale, Ox-chamberlain)
Yes you pass the ball around but most the possession was in areas that cause no damage – hence the shoreline!! Again this fact was picked up by many observers over the weekend.
Not sure why fans arrests etc is relevant, but again check your facts and you’ll see earlier this season there were many reports detailing how the stats show different to your comments.
From most level headed Saints fans I know, they are actually concerned that your Manager (who incidentally spoke perfect English to the linesman on Saturday but doesn’t to the media, purely to allow him thinking time for responses) will certainly leave in the summer if not before and that your now reluctant owners will asset strip before selling the club in the summer.
And finally as we are talking money and history. Shall we talk about the many small companies in Sourhampton that went bust when you’re club with so much money went into administration and treated local suppliers with contempt when coming out of administration…….Funnilly enough, 1 bit of history you didn’t mention!!!

      • Dave says:

Your getting your couthcoast clubs mixed up…Everyone was paid IN FULL.

With regard to selling players, Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry..yadda..yadda…yada

        • spider says:

          Dave
You know that’s not true and you also know that it’s been very convenient that your real rivals (that’s Portsmouth not west ham) have been financially mismanaged and therefore took the heat off what Rupert Lowe did to local businesses prior to the new takeover and that damage was never recovered.
John Terry was in youth set up for very short time so you may wish to check facts on that one. And yes you are right on other players and I don’t believe either I original poster denied that.
I was asking the point to the poster I replied to that to harp on about saints players potential is risky given your history (as it would for a west ham fan to do the same)
I think what has irked most is how surprisingly bad your fans took the defeat on Saturday. I’m guessing some of that is because you still haven’t beaten a ‘poor’ west ham side since we both returned to the premier league.
I’ve read the complaints about the borderline offside and the handball(which was shown to be your player) but funilly enough not to much mention that Tomkins didn’t actually touch Adam ‘Tom Daley’ lalana for foul leading to your goal.
Oh and on filling the ground – have you filled st Mary’s since promotion for any game against the perceived top 4 (which despite your fans views is not where you are!!)?

        • punkrockhammer says:

When did we sell John Terry? Can’t wait for Southampton to do a Reading and go back down to where they belong. Arrogant, know nothing fans with an irrational superiority complex who are happy to watch players cheating week in, week out and throw insults at teams that have the temerity to put the ball past their goalkeeper several times more than they are capable of themselves in 90 minutes. Really quite laughable

      • Dan says:

We SOLD players….. Sure… We probably will sell more.. But the difference is that we have a state of the art academy churning them out at a rate!… Sustainable and profitable!

As for possession football…. You are right, against yourselves we failed to damage or take chances… But our current league position ABOVE you suggests that that style of football has served better than your own over the course of the season so far.

I have seen first hand your fans and shan’t quote stats…. For me, the temper and misguided vile comments should be reserved for prison and nowhere else.

You talk about our “reluctant owners” – I find it strange that you have an inside track on their philosophy regarding our club… If the national press could not know then how the hell can you?? Our owners saved our club, invested heavily and developed a “can do” mentality… I have seen nothing from them but passionate support and investment… What evidence do you have other than a tabloid rag to suggest otherwise?

When you talk of the companies suffering at the hands of our clubs previous difficult financial times.. Are you forgetting the actions of your own former owners and their involvement in Icelandic ventures and the subsequent impact on major uk investment?
I feel very sorry for anyone who lost out when our club were struggling financially but that was the scene set by previous owners who would literally have sold their own children to make a buck!

Our club does not smell of roses but I am damn sure yours does not either so get off your high horse and enjoy the rest of the season!

        CoYR!

        • spider says:

          Oh Dan, Dan Dan
Where I shall I start with my replies!!!
Your league position has more to do with the fact that your main players have stayed injury free all season wheras ours haven’t. Now most of ours back we are charging you up up and you have suffered of late with injuries of your own and are dropping to probably the right position in the table. We have taken 4 points from you this season so I’m guessing we are doing something right.
Let’s not pretend Southampton fans are angels. You’re main problem is following demise of Pompey you have no rival and like Reading have done previously you are looking for one.
You initially stated that all debts from the football club had been honoured I’m glad you’ve now corrected that. To blame my football club for the bank crisis does seem a little strange but you know local companies in Hampshire directly folded as a result of the Southampton administration
I don’t think any catering firms in east London went bust because the Icelandic economy crashed!
And finally I have no more inside knowledge than you on Southampton and couldn’t possibly get info given from the papers – as you know Southampton ban most journalists!!!
High horse – which one is higher yours or mine?

          • Dan says:

            Spider…

Our league position has more to do with lack of injuries??….. how? We have missed Wanayama and Lovren for huge spells… not to mention our failure to blend Osvaldo into our team (and also Ramirez)…
So who are our ‘main’ players as you put it??… llalana (SFC academy product), Shaw (SFC Academy Product), Ward Prowse (SFC Academy Product), Chambers (SFC Academy product), Lambert (1m buy 4 years ago), Rodriguez (7m young buy from Burnley), Jack Cork (1m buy from chelsea young), Fonte (1m buy from Palace 5 years ago), Schneiderlin (1m buy from strasborg 6 years ago)….

Do you not think that our league position has more to do with the football and effort of our lads that have put in?? Or is it only westham that can congratulate themselves for anything??

As for the financial impact on small businesses…. I have already stated that I have sympathy for any affected by our finances 5 years ago…. this was however under a different regime – one that the supporters could not wait to leave the building as they were also abusing our own money along the way.
The point about financial mismanagement that you raise can be laid at the doors of many many other clubs ona greater basis than that of saints… I also would be very wary of how your OWN club is run financially… Do the numbers really stack up to you?? Not my business.

Lik I previously said – our club isnt perfect… but the performance (overall) this season have been a joy for our supporters to watch. The exceptions being against chelsea (twice), Tottenham (Once) and West Ham (Once).. The draw at our place was a god game which I enjoyed watching!!… The only let down for me was the second coming of the hammers fans sneaking into the home section to start fights. (again)

my horse is tiny… a shetland pony – but it gets me from a to b and I love it dearly.

Again – goodluck for the rest of the season!… Got to love football opinions.

            Cheers

        • spider says:

          Dan
My point on injuries was, you had remained reasonably free of them early season and this contributed to your higher and (even you’ll agree) false position. As out injuries equated to our lower and arguably false position. You’ve suffered more injuries of late and obviously lost your striker when he had a tantrum (we’ve had that before too!!) and this has impacted your position. We are now 1 place apart in the league which come the end if the season will be a fair reflection on 2 teams on their second season.
My original point which I stand by is that should your manager leave I’m Summer (which even your own fans fear) and the board cash in on shaw and Lallana then all of a sudden the outlook is bleaker – remember should your manager quit it will probably be Les Reed who picks the new one….and you think big Sam is a dinasour!!!!

          • Dan says:

All good stuff spider – I think we can both agree it has been a very very interesting and fun season this year so far!…. Title race is exciting, our mid table scramble is keeping you and I busy… Man utd have had the “worst luck” 😉 and Liverpool are offering a real team again! (Minus toure the dancer).

Great season and I’m really enjoying it all – highs and lows.

As I’ve said in many other posts, the game against you last weekend was well won. Hopefully we will learn from it (& keep our manager) and come back and try again next year.

As for shaw, even my heart tells me that he will be playing for a bigger club next season but with Lallana I think we should be able to keep him.

We need some new faces and hopefully our academy will offer up some more gems.

Good luck for the season – it’s been good to discuss!

            Cheers & CoYR

Have I missed something here – since when did Southampton become Barcelona! You may be playing the ball around a bit more since your foreign import manager joined but you played more hoof ball up to rickie lambert in previous seasons than we ever have – and were attempting it on saturday when you were chasing the game! Also seriously saying west ham’s ground is in a terrible area I grew up in east london and i know it is a working class place so yeh kensington it is not but coming from someone whose team resides in a red light dock area – have a word mate please!!!

  • Jamie says:

Why do people bang on about ‘attractive football’, i have watched countless games of two teams that apparently play this way and they have been the most boring games i have ever witnessed. I have also watched many west ham teams attempt to play this way over the years and have ended up being relegated. So do you really blame big sam with the resources his got to make his teams hard to beat and keep them in the league which with the financial implications is the most important thing? I just wish teams like southampton who are having a good season and have gone through the trouble in the lower divsions after falling out of the prem attempting to play ‘attractive football’ would stop banging on about how well they play and realise that is a game of football and if you cant do enough to win, (whatever the style of football) be gracious in defeat.

  • Carl Smith says:

It’s funny reading your comments about our criticism of your outfit. You don’t need opposing fans to slag you off, you do a great job of venting your spleen about your manager and his tactics yourselves. I went onto your site a few weeks ago and the hatred and vitriol against your BFS was shocking. I think BFS has come out of his recent travails extremely well.I thought you played some excellent football on Saturday, especially in tne first half. You were strong and effective. I lost count of the number of times you got the ball out wide and got great crosses in. Your football was being criticized unfairly on Saturday by our fans. This is because of what we’ve witnessed against you in the past. Its frustating to play against a team that can hardly string 2 passes together and still not win but thats our failing. To be fair we never seem to witness an entertaining game against an Allerdice team and I’m including his pre West Ham days and this is why Saints fans have this negative attitude towards BFS teams. On Saturday I said to my son several times “look they’re actually playing some good stuff” and it WAS an entertaining game. You don’t have the money that enables you to have £30 million players on the bench like Chelsea and so you’ve got to compete on your own terms. I’m proud of the way Sainrts are trying to compete with the big boys by trying to play a cultured passing game. On Saturday it just didn’t come off. That’s another one to you. Our day will come.

  • Dan says:

    Good morning Hammers.

I am a saints fan – I am proud to be one.

I have witnessed on two occasions in the last 18 months, hammers supporters coming to St Mary’s, sneaking into the saints supporters end and then half way through starting large scale fights with our fans. I THINK YOU NEED TO THINK HARD ABOUT THE WAY YOUR OWN FANS BEHAVE FIRST.

The second observation I will make is from several years ago when I came to the Boelyn with a mate to watch the Hammers play Arsenal. Adebayor scored and the whole stand around us seem to erupt with anger and a chorus of “F off you c@@n” – this was disgusting behaviour not just by fan standards but by standards of humanity!…. In fact a young girl sat just in front with her dad were also involved!

The third observation is when both Saints and the Hammers were competing in the championship…. When reading won it!…. Saints led the league for a great deal of the season and when I heard or read anything from the Hammers faithful, it was always “how are saints above us?.. We are a bigger club than them!”…. This to me suggests that maybe you also have a misinterpreted understanding of where you come from.

Lastly, the talk of llalana cheating or otherwise… Are you suggesting that Nolan plays by the book?… Are you suggesting that the whole revel affair should not have seen your club punished much further than they were?….
I do not condone cheating or even going down easy…. But please stop kidding yourselves that your club, players and fans are more virtuous than any other in the land!!

As for the game – I don’t care whether we play attractive or if you play direct…. You deserved to win, your lads took their chances and ours did not. Our defence wobbled and yours did not. Good three points for you and a nice compliment to the great results that you have pulled together in a decent run that will surely see you now I finish around ourselves in mid table.

SFC are far from perfect, believe me our fans have been pulled through the mill like most other clubs…. We are enjoying seeing our club, team, ownership and fans pull in the same direction for a change…. We may goad other teams but for me “hoooof” is a pretty weak level of abuse – so why rise to it?

I applaud the recent results taken by west ham, however I personally would question the “thin” nature of your squad – for me this is without a doubt big SAMs fault… He spent virtually your whole transfer kitty on Carroll knowing that he can struggle for fitness…. Maybe he should have looked for a better spread of the cash on other players.

Anyway, good luck for the rest of the season – look forward to the next encounter in the prem next year!

    Cheers & CoYR

I also went to the Dell when Rio Ferdinand played for us and was greeted with chants of “you’ll never play for England”
Both examples a few years ago but demonstrate the the current blinkered knowledge shown by southampton fans is sadly nothing new

    Haha! HOOF! HOOF! HOOF!

You do hoof the ball you idiot, that’s why they shout it. The saints fan’s shout the same thing to any team that starts hoofing it up long. As your team does it more often than not, they shout it more often than not.

Quite rightly the saints fans feel aggrieved, as despite playing by far the better football and controlling the match, their team on too many occasions this season have made shocking defensive errors whilst at the same time failing to finish attacks off. Quite rightly they feel they should have beaten west ham. They are frustrated. The league table doesn’t lie, they are above you.

    How old are you 10?

I think your football is a throw back but if it gets results fair enough.
The Saints style of football is susceptible to the hoof we needed our star defender to be fit. I would have taken the generous odds on a hammers home win as you have been in great form lately.
We are a mid table club but heading upwards, this will take upto 4 years to be a top club as we bed in our star youngsters, Sims a 1st cap international England just won the game for England via Holland with a goal and assist, we have an enormous pool of young talent that will burst on the scene in the next few years, we’ve caught the rest of the league napping and invested in training our youngsters in a certain style of play and club ethos. Our youngsters have all grown up together then they burst into the first team and get to play with their mates, I shouldn’t think that many carrots dangled in front of them are tastier than being in a team full of legitimate close friends with the potential to soon be challenging for the top four which is the cubs long term stated ambition.

West Ham used to play like Saints, attractive football. While the way you are playing may keep you up, a club like West Ham who had such talent like Bobby Moore etc should be playing on the floor. Why don’t your owners go for a Michael Laudrup or someone of that ilk and bring back that WH tradition? Your football is ugly but effective and seems to be a way of plugging a hole in a sinking ship, you might stay up but definitely not next season.

The BMU were yelling ‘Hoof’ everytime that Saints hoofed it and they hoofed it many more times that West Ham did. Many saints fans on here and rightly so this article’s an embarrassment to decent hammers everywhere, if your so offended by there hoof chants then maybe that’s because it cuts too close to the bone? And well it should, Big Sam all be it, is keeping us afloat has turned us into the new stoke… I’d rather support a west ham that’s admired by the rest of the league for the football they play, than detested as we are now, frankly it’s embarrassing

This comment isn’t really directed at anyone but I after reading most of this thread I want to say it.
I’m a west ham supporter and I’m 18. I’ve been following them properly and intensely for about 6 years and for me these last few seasons under allardyce have been my favourite to watch. I know I wasn’t supporting west ham back in the “good old days” but I am supporting them now.
I think we can all agree that each team has a specific style of play and some days it works and some days it doesn’t. I couldn’t care less is west ham played the long ball game or a short ball game or anything in between, I would still be a hammers fan and I would still be jumping up and down at every goal and every win we get, regardless of how the ball got in the net.

great spelling mate and btw saints have never been in League 2. Enjoy mediocrity and relegation with your ageing over paid squad all the while watching our young talented players from our academy rise up to the top.
