There seems to be some mad hysteria about the lack of deadline day signings, especially the prime target of a striker. Some West Ham Twitter accounts seemed so desperate to break some good news that they’ve attempted to create a backlash.
I appreciate we more or less need a striker but Andy Carroll is back now and any striker that would have been brought in would have been told they were always going to be second best behind big Andy. Therefore that would halt any deal which would pull in big players like Demba Ba, as many fans hoped on deadline day.
As mentioned above, the man who the team is more or less built around is due back from injury very soon. Ideally Modibo Maiga would have contributed 1 or 2 goals but he obviously isn’t of the quality we need and he is certainly more effective off the bench. Ricardo Vaz Te didn’t get the move he wanted either and if he can rebuild the burnt bridges, maybe he could be given the chance up top that he claims he wants. It could be the making of the man.
Most fans are worried about Andy getting injured again and what will happen then. We can’t worry about “ifs” and “buts” all season. We have to hope that he doesn’t get injured, simple as that.
Carlton Cole is supposedly on his way back to West Ham who should never have left it seems. He suits our style of play and is comfortably not good enough for a starting place but can certainly cause problems off the bench. If that deal does get sorted then at least we have 3 strikers to cover just 1 position until January where perhaps the Chairmen will re-evaluate the position again.
We’ve predominantly used 1 striker so far this season, and okay we’ve had a relatively kind start in terms of fixtures, but we have picked up 4 points and sit comfortably in mid-table. We beat Cardiff City who had 7 designated forwards in their squad to choose from for that fixture (inc. 2 ex-Hammers in Bellamy and Maynard).
I just feel we are far from a panic stations situation. Let’s not make a big deal out of nothing and enjoy having nothing to moan about instead of creating things to excuse a poor season.
