West Ham’s Hammer Of The Year Contenders

|

SportWith the end of the season regrettably, yet rapidly, approaching the contenders for the coveted Hammer of the Year award will begin to be thought of, in what has been a somewhat mixed season for the Irons, I felt it time to have a think about what players have stood out this term. Here are the top 3 players I believe should be on that shortlist.

Mohamed Diame: In his debut season for West Ham, Diame has been absolutely outstanding. His physical yet skilful displays led to much panic among the Hammers faithful in January about whether he would remain in the claret and blue or not. Thankfully he did, and has continued to impress. My signing of the season is going to be high on the list of nominees this season, and as a fan’s favourite I can see him scooping the award.

Winston Reid: The New Zealand international just continues to improve. West Ham’s number 2 had a remarkable season in the Championship and has further upped his game to prove he is good enough for the top flight. A constant face in the starting line up, Reid has been preferred to James Tomkins to partner the returning James Collins and has proved more than enough why.

Joey O’Brien: An outside choice if ever I saw one but Joey has had an incredible season for the Hammers. Playing at either his natural right back, or used as cover at left back, the Irishman has been solid and has certainly won me over with his displays of late. I personally think that he’s a tad underrated and his performances are not singled out by many fans, deserves a bit more credit.

Players such as Mark Noble and Guy Demel have also had impressive seasons, and had Andy Carroll not been injured so much I think he’d be on the list, but they just haven’t contributed the amount that the players above have. I can’t choose between Diame and Reid and I don’t envy the person who has to, but both have had outstanding seasons and have emerged as true fan favourites.

Diame would be if he had played more and Fat Sam didn’t sub him all the time. But Reid has been our best player this season. Ever present and consistent. COYI!

    Noble
    Reid
    O’brien
    Diame

Noble deserves the award simply for all his effort every game he plays in the claret and blue, he does not have a release clause in his contract like diame, he will be here in the later years unless BFS sells him, so I will always pick a True hammer like mark coy!

O’Brien has not been one of our best 3 players. Someone commented putting Nolan in the top 5 which is utterly ridiculous.

Reid, Noble and Diame have all been on a par for me, standout performers. Demel has been good. O’Brien has done ok but not top 3. No one else deserves to even be considered this year.

  • Northern Hammer says:

    Obvious… Reid

Noble has played well… considering he has carried Nolan for a large proportion of games, but not player of the Year.

    Diame – excellent… in patches
    O’Brien – I was ready to forget about him…wrong..
Cole – Just because… how much did he enjoy his goal on Monday?!

    Reid and Noble..
