Reid to lead?

|

Winston Reid has been an ever-present fixture for West Ham in recent times, being chosen ahead of James Tomkins to join James Collins our starting line-up. But is he good enough to lead the team?

I would say yes. He’s a solid defender and knows how to get players around him to work with him on the pitch. You only had to see the rollicking he gave Joey O’Brien against Newcastle United to know that he knows how to get his point across!

And at only 24 years old, he has plenty of time to grow as a player, but is already pretty bloody impressive. He also recently chose club over country, which obviously shows his commitment to the team.

Looking into the future though, it seems unlikely that Reido would get his shot of captaincy ahead of Mark Noble, who seems like the natural choice for the hotspot when Kevin Nolan moves on from the club.

Although he has great authority and could lead from the back, I just don’t think Big Sam would pick him over local hero Noble. Although, he’s already been picking him over local boy Tomkins so what do I know?!

He certainly has the capabilities to be a captain, as he has a great attitude and isn’t afraid to confront his team mates when they’re not pulling their weight. He also has a cooler head than Noble, so may be better placed to help diffuse any fiery situations on the pitch.

That is, of course, assuming that he’s with the club for the long haul. Despite rumours of imminent contract talks, there are conflicting whispers that some of the top clubs in the Premier League are after Winston.

He’s still contracted to us until 2015 anyway, and with both the club and his agent apparently being confident of him signing a 5 year extension, hopefully Reido will be with us for years to come!

After all, he did put the ball in the pikeys’ net…

What do you think? Could Winston be our captain in the future? Leave a comment or tweet me at @alwaysintune.
