Make or break, already?

|

I feel as if I am repeating myself, every week I start a piece with the line, West Ham have started as well as they could of wished. Once again, I can find no other alternative to point out. If it is possible, cast your mind back to the Arsenal game at home and forget about watching some pretty forgettable internationals for England and think about how well a West Ham United side performed against a very classy Arsenal side. Arsenal were very professional and efficient, nevertheless it took Wenger’s men 72 minutes to take the lead over a spirited Hammers performance.

Admittedly, however well we performed and how valiant the effort was, Arsenal probably deserved all of the points, but only because they had Santi Cazorla and Mikael Arteta causing Sam Allardyce’s defense all sorts of problems. Though to try and combat this the work rate of the West Ham team in general was first class, and having watched the dull effortless team performances of recent years, most notably under Avram Grant’s leadership, to watch a West Ham side so committed was inspiring. The work rate of the side alone was impressive, but some of the play was magnificent and this has reinforced many an opinion that we may have enough to not just stay up, but also cruise to survival.

Although, before we start to get ahead of ourselves, there are certain fixtures that we need to make sure that we pick points up from, preferably win those games. Of which, I believe that the next two fixtures that we play could make or break our season. Our next two fixtures begin with Southampton at home on Saturday followed by a trip to Wigan Athletic.  Southampton will be a tough opponent; they have some very good attacking prospects and a certain striker who always seems to score in Rickie Lambert. The trip to Wigan will be no less tough, with the historical background that surrounds this fixture it may be a nervy fixture but if we can perform to our best capabilities, which we have done so far this season away from home, bar Swansea, we could be sitting in a very lucrative position.

Fixtures against these sides are so important because these are the games that essentially we need to be winning so that we can ensure our survival in the top division and if we can take the next six points they could be the biggest points we take all year. If we did so, we could potentially have 17 points after just 8 games, leaving 30 games to just pick up the remaining 23 points that is the benchmark for Premier League survival of 40 points. The fact that we could make that statement of intent that we look more likes a top half tableside than one who is just staving of relegation could be vital, not just for the confidence of the team.

  • AGREED ALTHOUGH ONE GAME WILL NOT DEFINE OUR SEASON THIS IS A BIG ONE ! IF WE CAN WIN SATURDAY IT MEANS THAT WE PUSH THE SCUMMERS AS POMPEY CALL THEM FURTHER INTO THE MIRE AND OUR CONFIDENCE WILL GO UP. I BELIEVE WE CAN DO MUCH MORE THAN STAY UP AND WE ARE THE BEST EQUIPPED PROMOTED TEAM TO PUSH ON. IT WILL ALL REST ON US TAKING OUR CHANCES AND KEEPING LAMBERT QUIET AND ALLTHOUGH I LIKE COLLINS HE HAS HAD DODGY MOMENTS AT SWANSEA,QPR, NORWICH AND ARSENAL AND IF I AM HONEST CANNOT SEE HIM GOING THROUGH THE GAME AND KEEPING CONENTRATION SO WE MIGHT NEED A BIT OF LUCK TOO. CARROLL TO OPEN HIS ACCOUNT ON SATURDAY. COYI

Sad to see you leave the other site Bristol. Totally understand though.
I pin pointed these two games as opportunities to give us the comfort of having the 17 points before the slog before New Year, but I would not put them down as make or break either.
Looking at their team sheet we don’t have anything to worry about besides as you said Bristol, Lambert and may be Lallana.
Can’t wait for the roar if Carroll does open his account. He must behave himself better than Diame did though.
