Sometimes the grass is greener

|

This transfer window has seen the Hammers make a lot of changes in all areas of the pitch; one of the most notable of all is the departure of Robert Green. The question is can his replacement in Jussi Jaaskelainen step up to the plate and deliver the goods? I honestly think so.

After years of being the cat between the two sticks for West Ham United, Robert Green finally chose to see pastures new at QPR after failing to agree a new deal with the Hammers. For years he has been with the club through turmoil and delight, such as relegations and promotions, but most notably the FA Cup final back against Liverpool, but let’s not rekindle that forever deep wound in us all.

Throughout his career with us he has shown form which has impressed even the likes of England international coaches, leading to him getting called up and making a cameo first team appearances.

He was well known for his “cat-like” reflex saves and shot stopping ability and made some outstanding saves last year and many seasons before. However, there is always a down side to the good and a huge amount of pressure was placed on his shoulders after he started to make school by mistakes on a regular basis for club and country, thus giving him a “dodgy keeper” title to his name.

Despite the downs, he has always stayed professional and worked hard to improve his game and reach the best of his ability and that is something you have to respect him for. At West Ham fans loved him and many are heartbroken by the fact that he has left and we are now a lot weaker at the back, however with Jussi Jaaskelainennow the main man supposedly, can he win over the fans and live up to the expectations fans will have for him?

Jussi has signed for the club along with Stephen Henderson, with the number one spot up for grabs it’s going to be a close call who will start as our number one, whilst most people expect it to be the more experienced Jussi. For years at Bolton Wanderers he has proved to be an exceptional goalkeeper and has attracted interest from big clubs for some time, most notably Manchester United were interest in him at one stage.

I honestly feel he will do a great job for us and he will win the fans over quickly, he has very good reflex saves in his locker (not as good as Green, but still very good) and with his bundles of experience in the league, there was not many options better than him to sign as a replacement, as I feel Paul Robinson is now past it slightly and would have been the wrong choice.

He has worked with Big Sam in the past and I am sure they will work well together this year and for the remainder of his contract. Have faith in his ability and in Big Sam. COYI!

Hislop was the keeper against Liverpool that day, sir.

Another great article, from which I have learned a lot about my beloved football club. Five stars all round. :o)

  • Left Hook says:

As USA Dave said, Shaka Hislop was in goal in the FA cup final against Liverpool and I think it was partly because Carroll spent a fair bit of time injured that season.
I would never claim to be the most impressive source of information on my beloved club but I must stop clicking on this site from the newsnow website because it so often contains articles that show a shocking lack of knowledge about the club and its history. 😉

Green in goal for the cup final against the mickeys?? pmsl.

  • Boo Hammer says:

Robert ‘The Cat’ Green? Wasn’t he the chap who played in goal both for West Ham and QPR? Or was that Phil Parkes? And didn’t he come for Jimmy Walker in the play off final against Preston North End, the year before he kept goal in the F A Cup Final? I’m all confused now. 🙁

    • USA Dave says:

Walker was injured late in the game against Preston, replaced by Steven Bywater. Green wasnt even on West Ham the season we went up. He signed January 06. I dont think he even played for us that season. I believe he played his first game in the 06-07 season.

Im not piling on, James. At the end of the day its just a blog about our football club. But it would help your cause to take a few minutes and fact check before you post.

I will keep reading, by the way.

  • Apologies for that mistake everyone. Despite the blip, hope you enjoyed the rest of the article.

    Thank you.
