Please tell me this rumour is just lazy journalism!

So first we’re linked with Ronaldinho and Nicolas Anelka, and now I’ve read something even more ridiculous. Apparently we’re lining up a £2.5 million move for Newcastle United’s Shola Ameobi!

I know Big Sam raided Newcastle for Nolan and that’s worked out rather well, but I can’t help thinking the result would be very, very different if we made a move for the Toon’s longest serving player.

Transfer website Caught Offside reported: ‘West HamUnited are interested in signing Newcastle forward Shola Ameobi and hope to conclude a deal for the 30-year-old before the end of the summer.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is the hunt for a target man after the Hammers were priced out of a move for Norwich City’s Grant Holt. Allardyce managed Ameobi when he was boss at St James’ Park and is confident he canconvince the striker to join him in East London.

The Upton Park club hope a bid of around £2.5 million will persuade Newcastle to part with their most loyal servant.’

Where do I begin?I just can’t see this happening. For a start, I’m pretty sure Big Sam wanted to sell Ameobi when he was manager of the Magpies, so I’m not sure why he’d want to part with West Ham’s cash to lure him to Upton Park now.

I also think Ameobi is a rather lazy player, and wouldn’t enhance our team. Let’s hope this is another one of those flash in the pan rumours where they think of a random player and link them to a club just for fun!

not my idea of a top striker thats for sure!!

  • Zoe says:

While we can never speak for all Newcastle fans, some of them are saying they hope the deal goes through, to offload him. Others are more defensive, and say he “tries hard” for them. This feedback alone (both points of view) seem to speak for themselves, really, but in any case – as you say – Sam wanted to sell him once; it doesn’t make sense on any level. And hopefully that sums up the level of authenticity, which I would think is zero.

    shocking ameobi what a clown

  • Spence says:

He is the Magpies version of Cole…In fact I reckon they were separated at birth. Both decent lads but cows arse and banjo spring to mind……….

  • Mick says:

Like hell are they getting him! Ameobi may be aging but hes still improving, had Tottenham, Chelsea, the Mackems and many others all over last season as an impact sub with his superb physical presence. And on top of that he’s the heart of the team. Wouldn’t let them have him if they offered £10mil tbh

  • Jboy says:

I wonder if he’d still slay mackems at west ham, if so wed let you have him and we’d take him back for the two games against sunderland

  • Ya Carlton Cole should in the Dagenham and District Sunday League, and Shola Ameobi in the Geordie Parks Sunday League

  • NUFC4Life says:

Never thought I’d say this, but I’d be gutted if he left Newcastle. For most of his career I’d have been over the moon, but now at 30 years old – he may be shite… but he’s our shite!

When he comes off the bench he is a real handful, has lost all of the pace he had when he was a youngster but is strong as an ox and will work 100% for the cause, but I think that if he left, he’d not be the same as Newcastle is his team.

Pardew loves Shola aswell, so I really can’t see it happening…
