Should we cave to his wage demands?

|

Robert Green started his career at Norwich where he caught the attention of the Hammers’ hierarchy and he was signed in August 2006 after making 241 appearances for the Canaries. In his first season, Green made 26 appearances for the Hammers, keeping 9 clean sheets, but it was in 2007-08 in which he enjoyed his most successful season. He saved three penalties out of three early

on in the season and was ever present for the Hammers. He was named “Hammer of the Year” and the club finished in a very respectable 10th in the Premier League.

Green was ever present in both the 08-09 and 09-10 seasons for the Hammers, keeping 10 and 8 clean sheets respectively. Green has become a legend at Upton Park, with the stadium erupting to

the tune of “England’s number 1!” and “Greeno, what’s the score?” He has made 12 appearances for England and has been an integral part of the Irons’ set up over the past 5 years. However, contract negations with Green have stalled due to his wage demands. Moreover, this season Green has been hinting at a move away from Upton Park, especially if the Hammers did not win promotion, with QPR interested in his services. So shall we give into his demands or let him go?

The first question you have to ask is can we replace him? Rumours have been circling that Sam Allardyce could make a move for Jussi Jaaskelainen, however he has been offered a contract extension at Bolton, so whether Allardyce could make a move for the 37 year old is debatable. Moreover how many season’s Jaaskelainen has left would be a worry if the Hammers were to make a move for him.

West Ham announced the signing of Stephan Henderson after impressing during his loan spell (even though he did not make a senior appearance). Henderson made 25 appearances for Portsmouth last season and the fans have high hopes for 24 year old. However whether he is ready to play in the Premier League is a serious question, so it is unlikely that Allardyce would throw him into the first team soon.

So where does that leave us? 45k a week is not a huge amount for a Premier League footballer, especially in today’s money, however the Hammers’ finances are not overly secure, so whether the club could afford to pay Green 45k a week is questionable. However if you look at the past players such as Kieran Dyer and Matthew Upson who were on around 70k a week, Green’s demands look much less outrageous. Green has giving a huge amount to this club and has become a fan favourite, but if he wants to leave then he should be allowed to go, however if he wants to stay, it would be hard to find a cheaper alternative that would give us such assurance in goal as Green.

Should we pay Green’s excessive wage demands? Could we find an alternative to Green? Are his wage demands justified? Let me know @TollyCoburn

Who our there is better then green we could possibly get?? Jussi will have another season and he ain’t the greatest sat on the bench all season to a team who got relegated you say our finances ain’t great but yet gave Nolan 50k a week in the summer green has kept us in more games then what nolan has I’m just using Nolan as a excuse here as I don’t know any one in much more the 50k green is still one of the best English keepers around so it’s a no brainier for me and also a loyal server who could have left us on numerous occasions but has stayed and been loyal go else has been to this club over the years I think he’s earned his contract

    keep him, enough said

  • Rob says:

    YES, HELL YES!
Should not even be a debate.
    Greeeeeennnoooooo, Greeeeeennnooooooooooo…

Rob Green has been a key member of the team since joining from Norwich. He stayed loyal to the club when we were relegated and played a massive part in our promotion.

Last season he was, quite often, left exposed and he made important saves to help keep us in and win games. Rob’s contribution was just as important as that of the goal scorers.

In my opinion, Rob’s contribution was excellent, no invaluable, last year. If he left, it would be a great loss. My opinion is that his wage demand of £45k a week is not outrageous when compared to others doing the same job in the Premier League. In short pay him the money.

just a point, but he didnt stay loyal to club when we got relegated, we DID NOT receive a single offer for him…! personally i like green, but lets not put him in same bracket as cole, who we did receive offers for and he refused to go.. if he wants to go to qpr because they will pay him 5 or 10 grand a week more than us, then let him go, he’s a millionaire, will never have to work again when he quits, but is prepared to go to a club that get about 16000 fans at their home games for an extra 10 grand, that aint loyalty . If he was that good a top club would come in for him, simple…

  • Paul says:

We really need to keep him, he’s saved us a lot (even at times this last season) and his wage demand compared to some of the other players isn’t that high.

  • Tonka says:

Can we replace him with someone better for the same or less money? No.

That’s really the end of the debate.

  • Robohammer says:

Bet he joins BFS’s agent mate and stays> Money for everyone!!

  • Bashammer says:

No doubt in my mind pay him the money

  • Max says:

His demands are worth paying. No transfer fee, probably our best and most consistent player. Just pay him the money

  • John J says:

A no brainer! We need to keep our best players and build from here. We owe Green for his match winning saves that got us back into the premier league. He’s been loyal to the club and now the club should repay him. He’s worth it.

  • Big Fat Sam says:

Don’t Worry Lads it’s all a skepticle , I’ve Spoke to Robbo and he has assured me he wants to stay he I just put off by the fact that the two Davids want him to make a porno with Karen Brady . Negotiation are still ongoing for this but he must be a very brave
An even to consider it .

  • westhamwag says:

Apparently Jussi has turned down the extension (even though he only played 10 times this year) at Bolton. So looks like he may be on his way here. Hope not as he is 37 and I much prefer Green. Give him the money his wants – West Ham Legend.

  • Ironman says:

Complete no brainer, i’ll be pretty annoyed if he leaves and it turns out the reason is the 2 Davids wouldn’t give him £45k per week. I mean come on, you have to respect your best, loyal and longest serving players and its not like hes asking for silly money when you consider we pay what looked like a quite average Kevin Nolan £50k per week. Wouldn’t mind Jussi in as back up as you need 3 keepers in the Prem but he was playing sum to and error prone Adam Bogdan last season. Owen Coyle may well have wanted to develop the younger Bogdan with Jussi’s contract running out and not knowing whether he would sign an extension. Ive seen us linked with Stockdale from Fulham today, he still young for a keeper at 25/26 and ive seen him put in some excellent performances over the last 2 seasons but is he really Greeno standard?

  • pompey hammer says:

There is no question, why all the talks anyway, just pay the man and get on with it.. greeeeeennnnooooo… coyi.

  • mikey c says:

we will not cement ourselves back in the premier league if we let key players like green go , what message are we sending out to other players and clubs , inviting clubs to come and buy and players not to join because we wont pay the wages the only players all we will attract are those that want to use us as a stepping stone , tired of bad ownership of west ham , tired of being a feeder club , were a big club with a great history, great loyal fanbase , so gold and sullivan put your hands in your pocket. the man could have left when we went down , but he stayed with us , so show him the same respect HONOUR HIS DEMAND .

  • englandsnumber6 says:

you lot must be watching a different Green, if he wants to go let him go he aint all that, he flaps at corners cant punch and has got no rapport with the back 4. not a single offer for him last year or in Jan, let him join the super hoops and watch them get relegated next year, no loyalty no class.
