Our Player of the Season…so far

|

When I was seven I wanted to be a footballer, when James Tomkins was seven he was a footballer. The defender joined the ‘academy of football’ while I was still playing kiss chase and he never looked back. Now at the age of 22 Tomkins is a permanent fixture in the West Ham starting line up and perhaps the first name Big Sam jots down.

I doubt many Hammers could argue that the England Under 21 international has been West Ham’s best and most consistent performer this year, taking the August player of the month in the process. Tomkins is everything a centre half should be calm, assured but yet commanding, three words that are forever associated with the late great Bobby Moore.

Ok, comparisons to our FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup captain are a little premature, I mean I’m sure at one point Danny Gabiddon was destined for greatness. However that’s the beauty of us Hammers, we believe, we support and we love everyone who pulls on that claret and blue shirt (yes, even you Marco Boogers) and combine our passion with the natural talent that our versatile defender has shown this season, then not only will he be a major contender for the Hammer of the year, as well as an integral cog in the Iron framework for seasons to come but we could also be on course to produce another World Cup winning captain for the Three Lions?

Tomkins is player of the first half of the season, with honourable mentions for Julian Faubert and Robert Green (who is in danger of becoming an unsung hero). I think Matt Taylor would have been a contender if he’d stayed fit.

Rob Green, all West Ham fans need to realise how well he has played for us.

Without Green we could easily be sitting in 8th or even lower, he has given us 3 points with some of his saves.

Can’t belive Faye has not had a mention. He has been outstanding for West Ham and by far our best signing. Not taking anything away from Tomkins as he has had a great first half of the season but Faye has been better and very consistant. Also would also mention Green and Faubert
